this is a classic recording including Mussorgsky's picture that most of you know. I just got from a store the first issue on philips (1996) which cover is shown at the center of this new cover (the 50 great recordings series, 2001). I read a review on amazon that said that the sound quality is improved on the second reissue. Is it really the case? is it worth getting the new one ?

24-bit remasterings can do wonders for old recordings provided the transfer engineer doesn't get too heavy-handed.

If this transfer is natural and hasn't been manipulated then the improved sound might be worth the $$.

How much better the sound is I don't know as I only have the 1996 reissue. It's actually pretty good for Richter standards but I'd love to audition that 24-bit.

Veit Bach-a baker who found his greatest pleasure in a little cittern which he took with him even into the mill and played while the grinding was going on. In this way he had a chance to have the rhythm drilled into him. And this was the beginning of a musical inclination in his descendants. JS Bach

Yes, I have this CD and can verify that the sound is a major improvement on previous efforts. To my ears, no obvious artifacts were added to the sound and even if they were it has to be for an improvement over the original which I have also heard.

This must be by far the best piano Pictures ever recorded. So much variety in color and so bold in the selection of tempi. I am happy to hear that there is a better issue now.
