A thread about interpreting the spirit of a piece of music (regardless of performance).

Is there some issue you want to discuss? Is there a question? Perhaps you could say a little more about what it is that you want to discuss...
Be kind to your fellow posters!!

What kind of impression do you get from a particular piece of music? What's the music about? If we are conscious about it, we can listen to it more focussed probably and really get to the spirit of it.

Is this something dumb I say? ::)  ???

I think that people experience the spirit of a piece of music as I do sometimes but rather shallow. It can be experienced at a higher level really. I got to it a few times. I don't know if it's really possible to be enduring though, maybe with yoga.

Why don't you pick a work, and we can discuss its spirit.

Excellent idea.

I can think of one.  A gentle spirit, or angel descending from heaven to guide you back up into heaven.  This I hear in Wagner's Prelude to Act I of Lohengrin.

I get that same transcendent feeling when listening to the Sanctus from Berlioz's Requiem--especially as sung by Leonard Simoneau.

I will have to listen to the Berlioz Requiem, as I haven't heard that wonderful work for quite some time.
