I'm happy where I'm working now, and I think my job security is good, but I am interested in using this site for meeting new people in new research areas and starting interesting collaborations. My wife is interested in it too as a way to find a job. Do any of you use it? Any thoughts on maximizing your results and avoiding spam, scams, and weirdos?

I use it and have had no problems with either of these.

Same here. The only "spam" I get is mostly from recruiters showing their interest in me.

I was invited in; but my line of work is nothing like the contacts I have. I rarely bother to turn up on it. But I have had no problems of the sort that might give me pause for thought.
