thanks for replies to my first post.
i felt this needed a new post just to get noticed cos it is a separate issue.

i have senns hd 595s which i am happy with. but they don't fit in my laptop and i have to use a reducer adapter. the problem is that when i do this, the combined weight or awkwardness of the adapter causes the headphones not to connect properly. I have to hold it in place for the sound to come through to the headphones!

unless someone has another option to deal with this - is the quality of going directly to the laptop with my headphones the same as going VIA a 50 dollar or so set of 2.0 speakers? or does doing this lessen the sound quality? if i had speakers maybe the connection would be fine. I reckon my laptop phono socket must be a bit 'flimsy'.

Thanks

The audio output of your computer probably contains $5 worth of electronics.  Your speakers probably contain $5 worth of electronics in their amplifier.  Neither is likely to be particularly good.  Your speakers may be able to play louder, but if the sound from the laptop is not good no subsequent amplification will remedy that.

so there is likely to be little no difference between the sound? ok. well it's good to know.

Buy the Grado adapter.

It will depend on the equipment involved.  If the laptop has anemic power, the speakers may be more satisfactory.   For casual use I usually plug my cheap headphones into the speaker headphone jack for convenience.  Sound is find, but my particular set of cheap speaks has poor balance between left and right as I adjust the volume knob.

Your headphones are better than a cheap set of PC speakers.  Perhaps your connection problem would be solved if you reduced the strain by using a cable extender out from your notebook PC and then plugging your cans & adapter into that? http://www.headphone.com/accessories/hosa-14-to-18-adaptor-cable.php  And if you want good headphone sound at a modest price, you might look into something like http://www.headphone.com/headphone-amps/headroom-total-bithead.php

Thanks for the tips  ;)

Scarpia - I dont know what anemic power is but i am getting the speakers anyway cos it is the only cheap portable way i can listen to internet radio without headphones. quality is not priority in this case.

DavidW - thanks I located the grado adapter - i will get one of those.

I just mean insufficient power, inability to drive loud enough without distortion.

oh ok, well in the case of my laptop an 'average' pair of pc speakers would definitely make a difference but in any case i have the senns for when i want something better - in time, with money, i will come up with more lasting solution.
