Conducting

I'm not a conductor and know nothing about it except that they conduct ahead of the music--giving direction for what's to come--whereas we armchair conductors conduct *with* the music. At least I do.

I prefer to conduct my recordings standing up. The musicians play much better that way.

Depends on which school of conducting you follow.  Bernsteinians (who must keep a hankie handy in case the music calls for weeping on the podium) would have great difficulty in an armchair.

However, beginning Celibidacheans will find armchairs much more accommodating than barstools. The latter are only for advanced practitioners.

If it's on video, I suspect there are synchronization problems. :o  Most of the conductors I've played for actually do conduct with, rather than ahead of, the music.  If we're behind, they stop and tell us so. :-[ :)
