Be interested to see what you guys post here. I have a selection of highlights on a Melodiya reissue, but the sound is variable. Looking ideally for something in stereo - though not necessarily a modern/digital recording - with reasonably good sonics, some lively playing and a bit of spark.

Over to you. And thanks. :)

I have this one:

Good sonics, complete music (plus you get Les Sylphides and other goodies)

My recommendation would be AGAINST a complete Delibes 'Coppelia'

Honestly, I very seldom feel like hearing this music all the way through. However, on those rare occasions when I AM in the mood, I put on Dorati on old Mercury LPs. I'm not sure if the music is truly complete (it IS a 2-LP set, but that's no guarantee) OR if it would qualify as true "danceable" pacing--ol' Antal tends to keep things moving along--but the performance is nicely rousing (thankfully...this piece can bore me to tears with the wrong baton-slinger at the podium), with exceptional sonics. I assume this has made the transition to CD.

I also have excerpt LPs by Ansermet (and Bonynge, too, IIRC) on Decca/London. Very good approaches to the music and typically excellent sonics there, too, though I haven't heard their complete recordings--others will have to vouch for (or give thumbs down to) them.

FWIW,

Andrew Mogrelia's complete recording for Naxos appears to be a good buy for the price asked.

HIP for all and all for HIP! Harpsichord for Bach, fortepiano for Beethoven and pianoforte for Brahms!

Antal Dorati with the Minneapolis orchestra. Coppelia has very nice music, but the complete ballet becomes, at least to me, a little boring.

The excerpts played by Pierre Monteux seem to me much more intersting.

I second that, not a boring minute to be found in this music.
This one is rather good too!

Many thanks to all for the recommendations. I realise this music may not be 'up there' with much of the best in ballet music, but I rather like it. :)

Coppelia is not the important thing on this thread. Its real aim is to deviate members' attention from the "Top X" thing.

What else would be the benefit of discussing Coppelia?

Harry

Delibes, what a wonderful composer, and beyond reproach no less, wrote fantastic, and I repeat fantastic balletmusic. You try to convince me otherwise.
You dudes just hate dancing girls, that's it. ;D

FWIW, so do I: and I'm watching this thread with interest. I've got the Bonynge recording, which is ok except for a truly excruciating viola solo in the final act; and the Nagano which isn't too bad, but doesn't quite float my boat (lacks insoucient charm IMHO).

Mark, did you find a recording you were satisfied with?

To be honest, Boris, I got a bit side-tracked and forgot to investigate further. ;D Thanks for reminding me. ;)
