For the record: I went into the F.Y.E. on Washington Street just to browse.

I just browsed.  Of my domain, I remain Master . . . .

Considering my "salvation": I keep doing both, order cd's at internet and buy at the local store, since both have advantages. I just hope the local store I buy records will survive. If not, well, there will be new stores started later again, for sure.

My store is just 4 km away. When it's on my way, I often visit it. Nice people, you can always listen to cd's in seperate little rooms, nice athmosphere. It's always a pleasure. Prices are reasonable. I just make a quick assessment about buying a record at the store or on internet. If I've made use of their service or want a record immediately I buy it there.

All very interesting; but way off-topic. (Just saying.)

Since Naxos is raising their prices next month, I'm trying to talk myself into buying all the things on my Naxos wishlist while they can still be had for $6ish. It is a fairly achievable wishlist, only 6-8 CDs, and a few of them are discs that fill major gaps in my collection with fantastic performances (Ravel L'enfant, Piazzolla Cautro estaciones). But it's taking a good bit of effort to convince myself that I should buy them. That has to be a good thing!

Reminds me that it's been quite a while since I last saw Rain Man.  So far the only CD purchases this year have been the Haitink RVW symphonies (very nice!) and the Blomstedt/SKD Bruckner 7 (damaged in transit, MDT said they'll send another).  On the other hand, we just bought new smartphones for the family, a new n band wireless router, a new professional photo printer (eek!), a new gas grill, and various sundries that make it a darned good thing that I'm resuming full-time work next week!  We'll see how long my resistance lasts when steady paychecks (albeit much smaller than before) start rolling in again!

April, what do you think? A good month to exercise fiscal discipline?

April holding intact!

As my eye fell upon the New Purchases thread, I idly wondered how long it may be before I pull any such trigger in the new year.

Just musing, you understand.

My resolution dissolved already on Jan 2, late evening, because I received a mail reminder that a disc I had been searching for some time was available at an affordable price used... but I'll try to keep it at that order for january 16. Because I again realized how much un/half-listened stuff I have on my shelves.

I have found a vaccination containing small amounts of CD's taken regularly through the mail the best precaution against a full-blown CDCDCD.

Regular and small amounts... That's what I claim as well. And compared to what I witness others buying it actually works but it is still a steady trickle that adds up to quite a few discs over time.

I made this discovery too. Fortunately my wife won a wooden post-box thing in a raffle and it stands outside the house. Therefore the 'post' does not now come directly through the letter box and I am usually (but not always :o) able to creep round to the post box first.  >:D

I have no problem buying CDs....whenever I look at the catalogues of local shops I always remind myself to buy something which I will be most satisfied with. Usually I can listen to music for free on the radio, streaming on the Internet, borrowing from friends or from the library etc, so buying something is fairly uncommon when I can listen to soooo much music for free. In the end, I prefer buying scores and sheet music!

These days, they have this new stuff called "vinyl". Crazy kids.

I spent a lotta money on vinyl last year  ::)

I feel like slowing down on purchases now. Last year I bought quite a many (for me, not Harry  ;D  ) classical CDs. I have been into classical music more intensively than for over a decade. Non-classical side has been quiet: Edgar Froese is no more and pop music has gone down the drain after 2013 as I predicted. So it has been a good time to explore classical music. However, I need to listen to more what I already have. With classical music purchases get out of hand so easily...   :-\

Fixed that for you, the point being that as you age, pop music always goes down the drain. Though I admit there are stuff after 73 that's good, but that's more for demonstrating how bad most of the other stuff is.   ;)

Well, pop music might have gone downhill after 1973 or whatever, but it peaked miraculously around 2011-2012.
