To start things off, I have a specific request for help.

I like Schubert's Nachthelle D882  -- I love the combination of high voice and male chorus.

Can you recommend me something else which I may like -- something in the same genre, maybe?

By the way -- the only record I have of Nechthelle is Schreier's (with Sawallich). It's not on youttube, but here's another version for anyone who is unfamiliar with this ravishing music:

The night is calm and pure,
in brightest radiance;
the houses look out with astonishment,
standing shimmering with silver.

Within me it is also wonderfully bright,
so full and overflowing,
and it prevails there free and clear,
entirely without sorrow or complaint.

I cannot contain within my heart
all of this rich light;
  it wants to burst out, and it must burst out;
the last barrier breaks.

Well, the disc from the youtube video appears to be the one below. I don't have this one, but the disc had a number of Schubert songs in a similar style, though without the soloist (and the RIAS Kammerchor is highly regarded. so I would imagine the rest of the disc is pretty good).

Another disc that I have been looking at myself is the one below. It has this song plus other songs for male chorus.

I have this one myself. It is #26 of the Hyperion series. If memory serves, they have choral pieces throughout the series on several discs, but this one is a beauty. I like the mix of solo and choral songs.

If you are looking past Schubert, my immediate thought is Brahms. You might consider one of these:

If you are looking for something a little later, there are a number of discs like this (compilations) or discs focusing on one composer (for example, Elgar part songs):

Be kind to your fellow posters!!

It's very kind of you to reply so fully. I appreciate it and I'll follow through the suggestions.

I've often wondered what that 1826 Schubertiad recording is like, and I've never heard any of Brahms's Choral music apart from the requiem.

I have the Nachtgesang CD, cond. Creed. I really like the choral singing on that CD. It's possibly one of the best CDs of this type.
