Swan Lake is probably the most popular of all classical ballets. Of the numerous versions on DVD which is your favorite and why.I can find no flaw in the ABT version. I have seen on stage the Kirov and Bolshoi versions and treasure the memory.

Plisetskaya, Makarova, Lopatkina. First is heavily cut, second has sloppy corps, third has stolid prince. C'est la vie. Haven't seen ABT (and many others).

edit: as to why, all three because of ballerina in leading role. If she doesn't have me spellbound the rest can be enjoyable but ultimately insignificant.

I love this version, with Nureyev and Fonteyn, and Lanchberry conducting.  What I love most is this version has the unhappy ending, and it is done so well and highly dramatic.
