I am here because people at Talk Classical recommended this place for in-depth discussion of recordings. I am a Recovered Habitue of the newsgroup rec.music.classical.recordings. Talk Classical has renewed my hope for the survival of civilization.

Welcome to GMG, Hilltroll!   :)  There are plenty of us former (or still current) members from Talk Classical.  Welcome aboard!   :)

Pleasure to have you aboard.  I recognize you from Talk Classical!  I am haydnfan (from TC)! :)

I hope that you enjoy this forum as much as you do TC. both are great places to post. 8)

There is only one true classical music forum. All others can take a powder.  8)

Didn't know you were on there, David.  I'm ChamberNut there, of course.  Haven't been on TC for quite some time though.  I couldn't stand that a$%hole from Quebec, Mysakovsky2000 (don't remember the exact name)

Hilltroll73

Thanks for the welcome, folks.

He hasn't posted for awhile. I don't know why not, but I'm not even glancing at that horse.

Welcome to GMG Hilltroll73!  I'm Air from TC.  I believe I was the one who recommended GMG over there.  ;)

This is a great place for sure too so definitely take a good look around.

@ Jets/ChamberNut :D You might be happy to know that myaskovsky2002 was permanently banned.  So come visit us again sometime!

I just joined like a month or two ago.  I've seen some of your posts.  As far as I can tell there are currently no trolls on that forum.  Well... unless you count me! >:D

Hilltroll73

I like your sig, DavidW. It reminds me of the mature compositions by Schnabel, though he made an occasional gesture toward tonality. And those gestures remind me of the mature music of Ives, who made gestures toward familiarity.

Of the three composers, Schoenberg is the most famous, and the one I enjoy the least. Must be gestures are important to me.

:)

DavidW

Well guess you can't use Schnabel on the mystery piece game! :D  Yeah I enjoy the three composers in this order: Schoenberg > Webern > Berg but I think I'm alone in that regard, everyone else puts Berg at the top for favorites. :)

Not alone! I would place them in the same order of preference.

And Hilltroll — welcome.

Welcome, Hilltroll73, and hope you enjoy your time here. Years ago I was also on rec.music.classical.recordings, but the enormous volume of spam and bickering nonsense drove me away. (Is the guy obsessed with Cheryl Studer still posting his voluminous tracts?)

Anyway, lots of interesting people here at GMG - I'm sure you'll find some to converse with about recordings. At some point, would be interested to know what your favorites are - in any genre or period - just from a "well-recorded" standpoint.

Do you remember that Ansermet maniac?  He would post old recordings, that was pretty cool.  And there was that poster that did a thesis on Berlioz.  There was one poster there that introduced me to my favorite Schubert 9th-- Konwitschny.  It's too bad that spam and trollers have swamped that forum.

Ah yes, the Ansermet guy.  ;D Like many, I like Ansermet's recordings very much, but this guy's over-the-top behavior probably did more to turn people away from him than anything else.

Yeah, in theory I like the idea of an unmoderated forum, but the reality seems to be that you end up spending too much time sifting through all the garbage to get to the gems. Too bad.

PS, and remember the guy who was obsessed with Naxos and how Klaus Heymann was taking over the world - or whatever?  ;D

Yeah I've had that vibe from a poster or two around here too! ;D

Brian must have been a teenager back then, maybe younger. :D

Many of those recordings weren't so very old. You may have gotten that impression from Jeffery's really, really bad transfers.

Hello Hilltroll!  Gratifying that the thread I started was responsible for your introduction to this forum.  Hope you like it here.
