Im looking for some DVDs with singing masterclasses as a gift for my girlfriend. I could only find 3 on www.masterclassfoundation.org. Are there any other out there?

She is not familiar with classical music at all, frankly she have never heard of Beethoven or Bach. But she sings pop music, and in fact she is quite good. She and her brother have won several prizes in local singing contests. I want her to get into classical music, but Im not sure if the technical orientation of the classical music will appeal to a pop singer. Do you think it would somehow mislead her, when she probably would keep singing pop? Would she be able to learn from it still?

There are actually plenty of masterclasses now on youtube to choose from. Some may be what you are looking for, not necessarily classically oriented. It doesn't hurt to have some classical training but if she wants to do pop, it might not be just the thing. Sometimes, a good coach could be better than a teacher, as technique often comes from being alive to the expression in the music, even acting can help.

Also singing teachers are pretty eclectic. A lot of them simply do not know what they are doing and even make damage. A reliable test is if the teacher sings with a good technique. There was a 40 year old teacher many years ago who played me a tape of his singing already many years before at the first lesson. My last one was pushing 90 and still had a good technique who turned out not surprisingly to be the best of all.
