Does anyone know anything about this?   She has cancelled some performances in Oregon with no explanation.   Do singers and other types of musicians have a duty to say why the cancel?

Well, google is your friend -  ;) :D

Check HERE - some information but no definite reason given - sorry -  :-\

The only news I can find is that she was "forced to cancel" the performance.

By whom or by what?  Unknown.

I did look at this link before and my reason for posting on here was to see if anyone had any inside information as to why she canelled.     I do hope it is not for heath reasons (ie cancer), but I think if that was the case then something would be pubished.

Well, I'm a retired physician and have had a number of friends die young from cancer, including several from breast carcinoma - this is a cancer that can return quickly or after many years and the outcome is often unpredictable.  This is a personal issue that should only be a concern for herself and immediate family and not a publicity announcement - if you care about her, then please have respect for her privacy in this affair - just my opinion - I hope all is well and not serious - I have a number of her recordings and love her singing.  :-\

The conductor Yakov Kreizberg recently died at the age of 51 and his family never disclosed the cause or course of his illness for this reason. Some artists, for all their public appearances, do cherish their privacy.

Let's all wish Ms. Upshaw the best and hope she will recover soon if she is ill.

I do respect her privacy, but when she was first diagnosed with cancer, it was made public.   I do hope it is not the return of her cancer.   She has several more performances this year and if she does not go ahead with them then that will mean something serious is up.

She did however look fit and well when she directed the Ojai music festival in June

I think the fact that she was diagnosed with cancer in the past does not bode too well for the present. :-\

That said, I've heard Upshaw live, and hope it's nothing serious, or insurmountable. (In general, not because I've heard her live.)

I do however wonder why this time things are hush hush.  Surely if it was ok to announce to the public that she had cancer before, it is ok now.   We are just speculating really.   It could be for totally different reasons.  Maybe family reasons.

I am glad to have met Dawn on one of her performances in London.   She did not know me but took time out to talk with me and have her photo taken with me.   :)

But not immediately, either.
I went to Amsterdam on August 23rd, 2006 to (a.o.) listen to her, but only when we entered the Concertgebouw we heard that she had canceled unexpectedly.
Arriving in the concert hall, we were so lucky to have a nice and friendly talk with the first trumpet player (Minnesota Orchestra, Manny Laureano) who told us she turned ill .... and that it was a serious matter.

Instead we had Viktoria Mullova playing Sibelius's Violin Concerto.

Mullova, Minnesota and Vänskä all proved to be in great form that evening.
All in all, it was one of my finest concert experiences, but later we heard that Dawn Upshaw was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Let's just hope it's less serious this time.

Yes, lets hope so.

I love her as a singer and a person.   By the way, I did find this article online.....

Prague Spring is sorry to announce that because of serious personal reasons, the American soprano Dawn Upshaw has cancelled her concert, which was to have taken place on Sunday, 22 May at 8 p.m. at the Rudolfinum.

This performance was cancelled, and then Dawn went on to direct the Ojai Music Festival which is a very gruelling event over a few days.   I can't help but wonder that if she had to cancel due to health reasons, then she would not have been well enough to direct the Ojai Festival.   Therefore I seriously doubt that her recent canellations are due to her own health and her return of cancer.

Kylie Minogue was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer a few years ago and had treatment and has been on top form ever since.   Let's hope Dawn Upshaw is as lucky as Kylie  :)   I do know someone who was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer 10 years ago and is stil alive to tell the tale.   However there was an opera singer who died from breast cancer in her 40s (she was actually a friend of Dawns).   She was a fine singer.   I cannot remember her name but she started out as a violinist and then went onto get voice training and sing.

Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, though she was actually 52 when she died.  Too soon, in any case.

ah yes that's it.   Thanks for the name.  God forbid if Dawn should go the same way, then that will be another great loss to the opera world.  Let's hope and pray that her absence is due to other reasons.

Dawn is scheduled to perform on October 13th with the Philadelphia orchestra.  I am interested to see if this goes ahead.

Just read online that Dawn has cancelled her Philly performance which would have been tomorrow (Thursday).  This time they have stated the reason which is a death in her family.   This only leads me to assume that her previous cancellations were to do with the same thing (illness in family).   Whilst it is not nice to have a family member die, it is good to hear that Dawn is not ill herself and will continue to sing.  :)

She never comes to London anymore (she used to come frequently).  She is cancelling performances in the USA.   She is fast fading into the background and one can never guarantee that any upcoming performance wil go ahead.    I thought she was renowed as a very very skilled singer/mentor/teacher.

My suggestion is to get over it and enjoy the recordings she has released instead of complaining about something you have no control over.

MI, This is clearly about puzzlement and disappointment not complaint. Let the individual express themselves without tutoring them thank you.

I'm disappointed that the Cocteau Twins are no longer together, but you don't see me starting a thread about it.
