How Many of AFI's Top 100 Have You Seen?

90-100
80-89
70-79
60-69
50-59
40-49
30-39
Fewer than 30
I'm too lazy to count

AFI's 100 Years, 100 Movies list is always good for spirited debate among film buffs:

Setting aside questions of how good the list is (at least temporarily), how many of the selected films have you seen?

Either through chance or good taste, I've seen most of the top 40 or so, but then it becomes much more hit-and-miss.

Well, I was curious - I've seen 98 of these films (my 2 misses were Intolerance, 1916 & Sunrise, 1927).  Now looking through that list, I own about 70+ of those movies on DVD, many commercial productions and a number 'burned' to DVD from the TCM channel.  :)

I have seen parts of roughly 30.

I have seen less than 30 in its entirety.

I've seen 62 of these movies, and those I haven't seen are mostly older ones. I think I will see many of these classics the coming year.

I've seen 73 of those movies.  My blind spots are the really ones (20s-30s) and the 80s.  Like you Grazioso I've seen most of the top 40 and then it starts falling off.

83. Some great movies there. A couple duds - actually one, but I don't want to spoil anyone's fun.

I'm running out of ideas for my netflix queue so maybe seeing the ones on the AFI list I haven't seen might be worth it.

A much better system than alphabetical.

I've seen 36 of these, in full.  I have seen bits and pieces of others.

Marc

I think 44,
but I'm not sure.

I guess I've been watching less American and more European stuff during the last decade or so.

And I tend to watch my faves over and over again without the need of seeing something 'new'.

And I'm also a sucker for soft and sweet :P romantic comedies and to watch them over and over again .... When Harry met Sally ought to be on that list.

(Meg Ryan, oh .... my .... :-*)

knight66

I have seen 72 of them. Tootsie????? Not in the top 500 surely.

I'll go along with that.  Let's just take "Sound of Music" off the list.

Ive seen 64 films off that list, but its a terrible list to be honest...

its like World Cinema doesn't to the Americans!

are you telling me that not a single Tarkovsky film would make the top 100? LOL

This has to do with the purpose of the AFI.

From their website: "The American Film Institute was founded in 1967 as a national arts organization to train filmmakers and preserve America's vanishing film heritage. The National Endowment for the Arts and Humanities recommended creating AFI as a nonprofit "to enrich and nurture the art of film in America" with initial funding from the NEA, the Motion Picture Association of America and the Ford Foundation."

Ditto, Dave -- although I saw bleeding chunks of Intolerance years ago in a film history class, and own only 44.  I understand why some of the older films were included for their historical significance, but some of the newer ones puzzle me.  Titanic?  The Sixth Sense?  Forrest Gump?  Clearly, box office success weighs heavily in the ratings.

They try to add modern films in order to make it interesting to everyone. But it is hard to rate newer films and it's hard to predict which ones will ultimately make such a list over time. While some films are instant classics, others take time to sort out. Incidentally, two of the three films you named won Best Picture, so they shouldn't be total surprises even if you didn't like them.

Ones that I have watched properly: 6
Onces that I have watched as a child or in passing but can't remember all that much of: 19

Curiously, the amount that I have seen increased dramatically as I went down the list. The top quarter was almost a no-show :-X

Edit: I would have voted for less than 30, but I initially voted for "too lazy to count" then changed my mind. I wish there were a 20 or less category so that I might look less bad.
