Quote from: Nostromo on December 03, 2025, 09:34:48 PMI'm no longer missing  :) . I was appalled by the way some people were treated in the audio forum. Since I'm not a huge fan of social media anyway, it was hard to take. I enjoy the music threads and a few others, so I will confine myself to those.

@Kalevala, thank you for your kind words in the audio forum.
Sorry you left, though I respect your protest. Glad you're back.

I kept my original screen name. I guess I didn't make much of an impression on you!  :)

I'm not a very active participant here so I miss a lot.

Thanks. The thing is, I don't really consider myself as a hardcore audiophile. For instance, I can't imagine that really expensive fuses actually improve the sound, or that elevated speaker cables sound better. (I did try that with some small jars, but I heard no difference!) But hey, if others can hear a difference, then good for them. I'm not going to attack someone who claims to hear a difference. Yes, I have a very nice audio system, but I bought the high quality components in service to the music, not as the endgame itself. Could I have spent less? Sure. Would that system sound as good? Maybe, but it would take a considerable amount of trial and error to find out.

I'm a composer which implies sufficient love of sound, so I'm no "audiophile," either. Similarly, my time for hardware futzing is, erm, limited.

You can still hear the music and enjoy it, right? Then that's all that matters.

There's no point worrying about fuses in a basic setup, you'll only notice the difference when the rest of the components are already at a high level. The same goes for speaker cables.

People sometimes talk about it sounding like the musicians are in the room with you.

What they don't say is how creepy that would be.  ;)

Is audiophile gibberish going to invade the missing members thread now?

I'm learning French at the moment, but you'll have to keep it very basic.

Écoutez Boulez, si vous pouvez!  ;D

¿Que?

I got a long way in the Duolingo Spanish course and after a couple of months away I feel like I've forgotten half of it. My French is VERY basic at the moment in contrast. I'm also revisiting German. No prizes for working out where I'll be when probably missing from the forum for part of next year.

I'm trying to head back to the topic, okay?

I once had a friend perform a Haydn piano sonata for me. The room acoustics were so good that it sounded like he was in the room with me.

Yes, but if he had corporeal form (and I assume most of your friends do) you could also see him. That would make it a lot less creepy. Depending on the friend I guess.

I have had that same experience when I perform Haydn and Beethoven sonatas on my home piano. Except I don't even need a friend with me.
