Alive and kicking. Thanks for the concern, although most reactions to your post were probably along the lines of, "Who?"

Just been doing more listening than chatting. I'm going to see Madama, Figaro, and German Requiem in NYC this March. If that's not good news, what is? So, the mystery of the who the hell is he anyway guy has been solved.  :)

Ah. I see the NY Phil is doing the GR under Dohnanyi in early March. Good to know, although I find the idea of charging up to $139 for a concert consisting of a single 1-hour-long work almost criminal. At least when Mr. Barenboim will be programming his Bruckner symphonies preceded by Mozart concertos, you know you're getting your money's worth. Am I sounding too mercenary? Well then, so is the orchestra for charging those prices. (That was a digression. But I like digressions.)

Good to see yez!

Just now seeing the links Karl. I'll check them out directly and thanks again.

I've got to say it's great to have Nate (EigenUser) back in the saddle again and there was a rare sighting of Luke on the Ravel thread. Sigh...I hope he posts more often. Things are looking good on GMG right now. Hopefully, several others members will return that have had a positive impact on the forum.

It seems all too easy for members to delete their accounts in a passing moment of frustration which they might regret the following morning.

I assume (having only been here a few months) that this issue has been addressed before. Does it have to be quite so easy?

Thankfully, I've never deleted my account, because whatever frustration I felt wasn't worth it. I just keep on plugging along like a certain bunny....

And that's why you're our reigning champ for number of posts, MI!

(I deleted my account once, but won't do it again. The main disadvantage is that once you're gone, it becomes difficult to recover your posts if you want to keep copies for yourself.)

Deleting your account is useful if you are concerned that you will be tempted to resume participation and want to place a bigger barrier.  I've deleted my account here at least once in the past, but I now feel almost no temptation to participate and there is no need.

I think the ability to delete your account is a good feature. I know of one site that does not allow you to delete your account and your only recourse is to get yourself banned. Some people post porn, but I called a moderator an idiot and that worked nicely.

You would have to try harder than that here Scarpia; as you know. That was not a challenge by the way.

On occasion something goes wrong and a member exits suddenly. It is then often very difficult to grasp what went wrong; as we can't search through their latest posts and have to just keep looking at likely threads. Sometimes it eventually emerges that it was nothing anyone said on the public area of the site.

It might be useful if there was an exit survey.

It is a peculiar feature that a member's posts are no longer searchable when the member de-registers, but one could look at it as giving the member some control over the content he or she created. I don't regard that as an entirely bad thing.

Actually you can search a departed member's posts, but you have to use Advanced Search and enter both the member's name and a bit of text. This can be tedious if you want to know what Member X thought of both Berlioz and Borodin, but perhaps you can use the word "the" and get everything the person wrote.

ETA: Well, scratch that. "Your search query contained too trivial words. Please try again with a different query."

Yes! A large number of posts with nothing in them! Just like Ravel said about Bolero. ;) ;D Anyway, I really have no life, but that's okay, I'm listening to music, talking about music that I love, and, for me, there's nothing greater than talking with like-minded people about a passion I've had since I was a kid.

Don't worry, my friend, you're not the only one.

This is a HUGE relief! :D

I like the idea of having control over one's account (for me not because of temptation to come back, but to avoid being contacted and in some cases to cut loose negative associations) but then I deleted my first one, and I'll probably delete this one whenever I get bored with this forum (anywhere from a few weeks to a few months from now... but we'll see)

I also like that OPs can lock their own threads, anyone can edit and delete their own posts and that sort of thing. Some forums only allow moderators to do that. (And I like that there's no word filter, although if I swore as much here as I do in real life there'd probably be one pretty quickly >_>) In general I like the moderation here a lot, actually.

The moderation is quite moderate indeed. Nothing to compare to the incessant Big Brother attitude of other moderation teams I know.

I see Sean is merely a guest again, although that's scarcely news; he's in and out like... (apt simile escapes me). I'm sure he'll be enlightening and entertaining us again soon.

I wonder what's happened to Greg Moeller?

In addition to my wondering what happened to Greg Moeller, I wonder what's happened to Composeroftheavantgarde (Jessop)?

SimonNZ

I was wondering that too, but I think he may still be at university and term has started.
