I'm surprised!

Oh, another surprise: count me in.

A train trip will be up this afternoon, I think I'll take a recording of this rather good work with me to listen to.

Come on, MI. Man up!  ;D  Answer the damn question: Who is your favorite composer? (Notice it's singular, not plural.)

:P

I couldn't possible answer who is my favorite composer, but those were my top 5, which is as specific as I can get. 8) It sure as hell isn't Mahler that I will tell you. :)

Thank goodness Mahler is generally loved on this forum (apart from by our good friend John  >:D ) . If everyone hated Mahler here, I would leave instantly! I take insults concerning Mahler very personally. Which leads me perfectly on to....

Sorry to disappoint you, Daniel. ;) There are several composers that you dislike that I like a lot, but I'm not disappointed that you don't like them, but rather that I accept that we are two very different people with different tastes.

;) I shall debate whether to accept your apology  :P I certainly do get very defensive of Mahler!
Which are the other composers (that you like and I dislike) that you are talking about? I don't dislike many composers - only Rossini, Paganini, Suppe, a handful of the (waltz) Strauss' (sorry Ilaria!, Stockhausen, Glass and a handful of other modern composers... as far as I know these are mutual dislikes! :)

I can perfectly share the feeling, I do the same about Mahler, Liszt, Beethoven, but especially (and above all) Wagner.

Ah, sure, what a pity John has some problems with Mahler's music....

I like a lot of Ligeti and you don't care for his music. That's just one example. By the way, I deleted my Facebook account for various reasons I won't discuss in this venue, but just thought you would like to know. :)

I haven't even listened to Mahler that much and I think I have heard only half of his symphonies.
His music doesn't seem that edgy or interesting.
There's nothing that I especially dislike or like about his music but it simply doesn't touch me in any way.
Perhaps someday I will get what is so great about Mahler...

I voted for Someone Else (Elgar).

and less tiresome in headphone listening.

Once again MN Dave has presented us with an opportunity for hitting the nail squarely on the thumb.

I find it rather difficult to pin  down a single composer to claim as my favourite. If I have to, though, it be Mahler. There are others, and especially brass band composers to, but Mahler seems to fit the bill nicely!

I was one of the (so far) Gang of Seven, more out of puckishness than an actual ability to pick only one favorite!

Bruckner - depending on my day - could be my choice, probably more out of ancient sentiment, since in a real sense I "grew up" during early adolescence with the DGG recordings by Eugen Jochum and with the Nowak scores von der Internationalen Bruckner Gesellschaft.

Arnold Schoenberg would also be in my Trinity!   0:)

Certainly here is someone who follows in the Bruckner-Mahler-Schoenberg tradition, and who speaks to me very directly:

hmmm... Yes, I don't like too much Ligeti. Some of the piano etudes are thrilling though... Any other examples? Can't think of any myself...
Shame you deleted your facebook account... make sure to stay in touch through GMG, or maybe personal email? We have much to talk about, not least the ballet!

I was wondering. Before your post only MAM and I had admitted voting for him.

Like you I have a personal trinity (Wagner/Mahler/Bruckner...with Schoenberg close to making the cut..a demigod for sure). If I really had to choose just one, with a gun pointed at my head, I'd probably tell the mad pollster to pull the trigger  ;D
