I have just started working through the more familiar symphonies with No 1; sounds like a good performance but I only really know Nos 3 & 4 well enough for comparisons.
Agree. It is dirt cheap also.

Mendelssohn performed by his own orchestra. If you want authenticity and legitimacy look no further.

Great set! :)

I think Kurt Masur is my 1st choice for performances by a traditional orchestra.
And the Concerto Köln are superb in the String Symphonies.

This is a recent release in period instruments. They are both the original versions, un-simplified concerto and longer octet. The playing is very good but, being a live recording, the recording and audience noise is too much for my taste. Especially during the beginning of the 2nd movement of the violin concerto there might be a problem. Other than that, a great pioneer.

It's been over a year and a half since I did any extensive Mendelssohn listening, but the 2 recordings I remember especially enjoying then (on Spotify) are: L'Archibudelli and the Smithsonian Chamber Players in the Octet and Quatuor Ebene in the F Minor Quartet.

(First post in over a year. Must have really enjoyed those recordings, I guess...  :) )

Oh, and I remembered another one, a bit off the beaten track this time: on DG there's a Kremer - Argerich recording of an early Concerto for violin, piano and strings. Not essential Mendelssohn perhaps, but a very interesting piece nonetheless, very eclectic in terms of idiom. Enjoyable music, and impressively played.
