Rough budget is around £300. This precludes a lot of very nice gear I know but such is life.

One's I've been looking at:

Epoz Akitmate: http://www.whathifi.com/review/epoz-aktimate-mini

Audioengine A5: http://www.whathifi.com/Review/Audioengine-A5/

Any experience in this area? Thoughts etc?

Those speakers seem woefully underpowered.  And despite the picture they're not described as docking stations.  They say they connect through the 3.5 mm headphone jack, which is for a speaker too noisy, not clean enough.  Sounds like crap to me.  Sorry. :-\

Options at that price level though? I don't think I'll be able to avoid annoying compromises at the price level I'm thinking of.

Build around a better source.  An ipod is not the key ingredient to a hi-fi.  I can't give specific advise because I don't know what you have available and what the prices are in Ireland. :'(

Source won't be an ipod so a dock being on them is fairly irrelevant to me. Sorry I should have specified that. It'll be my PC, using probably the DAC I currently use for headphones (Fiio E10) which is acceptable for its price though it has its flaws.
