Any thoughts on this set? Millenarium seem quite liberal/experimental in their approach...

Much of this music only survives in the shape of one single melody line, so musicians need to be experimental in their approach in order to make music of the sources. Sometimes I find Millennium´s solution a bit "academical", but generally the CDs are very enjoyable.

Yes, I was listening to the samples and it is indeed enjoyable. However, sometimes (especially in some of the instrumental samples) they sound very different compared to what I expect from this era. Temptations....

Andras Schiff: SOLO PIANO MUSIC (Warner) [Haydn, Schumann, Smetana, Handel, Brahms, Reger]

I'm pretty sure I heard the Haydn years ago, but I wasn't really into Haydn then...can't remember my impression.

I think you indirectly pointed me to this box a month or so ago Octave. I have not heard the Smetana disk, but have thoroughly enjoyed the rest of the recordings. Keep in mind that I am a Schiff fan, so perhaps I am biased. I really like his Bach recordings. Regardless, I thought the Haydn, Handel and Schumann in this set were delightful. I need to go and revisit them...    :)

I'm actually not considering any recordings this morning.

"Recording regret"? 8)
Considering how much I have purchased this year I have few regrets.
I haven't heard much of it but the biggest regret is buying
[asin]B0016A8E1K[/asin]
but that's just an interim judgement as I have been able to listen to less than a whole disc yet. It might take me a year or more to know for sure.  :)

I also think I regret this
[asin]B0085MK2O4[/asin]
but I knew I would when I purchased it. His Beethoven is just too damned weird.

Karl Henning

In my model, I can sustain a small degree of recording regret.

[Beethoven: Piano Sonatas (Gould)]
but I knew I would when I purchased it. His Beethoven is just too damned weird.

That's exactly why I don't regret getting that set. :)

I was hoping for a different take. What I got was a different composer.
One eccentric I do like is Gavrilov.

I have the individual Haydn disks and I like them a lot. Schiff has an understanding of the Classical style that I really enjoy.   :)

Ah, but one has to wonder why you even bought the box set if you don't like Ligeti's music? I bought the 'Collector's Edition' of the Boulez and even I enjoy some of his music. Surely you've heard enough Ligeti prior to buying that set?

Very little actually. I do like the piano pieces I have.

What about the VC? That's a good intro to his music. I strongly prefer the DG version though. In fact, I don't think I'd like the piece that much based off of the Teldec. "Melodien" is also very good and 'gentle' (no loud shocks like in the CC13I). If you like the etudes, definitely keep trying the PC -- it took me a year to enjoy all movements (I immediately loved the 1st and 2nd), but I definitely do now (even the 4th, which was the biggest challenge for me). I think you'll come to see that they are really similar in language (I promise 0:)).
Beethoven's Op. 133 -- A fugue so bad that even Beethoven himself called it "Grosse".

I have had a recording of Melodien for years.
