The new erato

I lucked into a symphony set free. He was clearly a man of immense talent. I find he didn't really achieve what he seems capable of, but he is very much worth checking out to form your own impression. He is definitely unusual.
The symphonies are sprawling all over the place. I find the string quartets more consistent and just as interesting. The Nightingale series on Dacapo is really superb.

Thoughts about the Requiem? On Foulds' works in general?  :-\

The requiem is very good, perhaps his best work (certainly among his most serious). Some of his music is lighter fare, but no less good for that (Dutton has four discs in this vein). Just need to keep in mind that the requiem is more ambitious (and succeeds for the most part too).  Another set with more 'serious' works is the Apex double disc. It has the Dynamic Triptych and 3 Mantras among the longer works. If you like choral, the Requiem is as good as any to start.
Be kind to your fellow posters!!

Thanks Neal! The Requiem definitely seems alluring...!

I know this is kind of scraping the barrel in terms of repertoire, but this (posthumous) crowning achievement of the much-maligned (rightly so?) Meyerbeer really has me intrigued...

The grand opera to end all grand operas? (good riddance, some would add)

Very interesting. I just wished I listened to the organ more......

Brian

Since they include several orchestral concertos, it's a pity they left out the Berlioz Te Deum with the Orchestre de Paris and John Nelson. That's a very, very good performance.

Are any of these $5 clearance discs essential?

The hard to read ones are:
- Romances with Gil Shaham & Orpheus Chamber Orch
- Kozena's "Songs My Mother Taught Me" recital
- Vivaldi's Gloria with Trevor Pinnock
- Pletnev's Rachmaninov Symphony 2

The Bartók and Kozena discs are to me. Kovacevich's Bartók ought to be good, too.

The Kova Bartok is mighty fine.

A definite YES to the Shaham Glazunov/Kabalevsky disc, especially at such a price. And I'll second the Kozena (she's right at home in this sort of repertoire) and Shaham Bartok.

What an interesting set... Hopefully some distributor will cut costs and sell it around 2$ per disc.

Yes, it looks intriguing with an array of more unusual works (at least for me). It is a bit more affordable at Amazon.de in case you are interested?
