Is anybody here a fan of Weingartner's symphonies?

"FAN" might be overstating it. But "Appreciateur", perhaps. Some of them are absolutely terrific!!!

They're very conservative symphonies (not that there's anything wrong with that), but none of them have really caught my ear. I suppose I like my Romanticism on the more adventurous side. :)

I thought you were talking about real life!  ;)   Mmm, too homogenous in your point of view?

I read somewhere that they were a bit "Brucknerian"!  Sound samples sound intriguing. Hmmmm.....

I never found them Brucknerian. More post Brahmsian / Raffian...

Anyone know this disc of Schumann's late chamber music?

And while we're at it...

I have a strong feeling someone was listening to this recently. And now I'm interested because it combines 2 works that I very much want to add to my collection.

I was, but I'm afraid I'm not able to give a qualified recommendation as I'm not familiar with the Schönberg piece yet (and didn't pay much attention to the Schubert, which I love and have other versions more familiar).

I'm considering buying yet another Ring (used to have it long ago on cassette and lp): the über Deluxe Decca Solti set. It is mighty expensive, but with all these 5* recommendations (and bonus material) it looks mighty tempting.

Any opinions ?

It was just reissued for under $50 (usd). Check the various amazons.

André

The under 50$ issue is the 1997 reissue without the bonuses (libretti and Culshaw book), **apparently** in less stellar sound.

Some of these amazon critics have supernatural ears that detect such differences. That's why I need more information !  ;)

How much of his other Wagner do you have?
[asin]B008H29YVY[/asin]

For me this was worth getting just for the Parsifal and Meistersinger.
But I am the wrong person to ask about sonics beyond the obvious.

ETA. It is the 2012 Decca box of his Wagner recordings.  No libretto, no Culshaw, of course.  Link works even if image doesn't.

Madiel

Hamish Milne also recorded most of the sonatas, Brilliant Classics has rereleased his recordings and used Tozer to fill the couple of gaps.

I don't actually own any of the recordings myself yet, but that basically seems to be the 3 key Medtner pianists.

Thinking of buying a set of Medtner piano sonatas by either Tozer or Hamelin.  Tozer is new to me and I usually like Hamelin a lot, and intuitively think he would be a good fit with this music.  I only need one set at this point, so maybe I'll go for the Hamelin since I can hear Tozer's set on Spotify.

Any others I should consider?

Is this because of Debargue's performance in the Tchaikovsky competition?

The short version to your question: for a first set, get Hamelin. You also get the totality of Vergessene Weisen opp.38 & 39 and the very substantial op.8 Skazki (op.8/2 being a particular Prokofiev favourite, performed by Hamelin with angst-ridden menace worthy of Shostakovich's op.103). More info on the available sets and their particular merits can be found in the Medtner thread (old and new).

Okay, I am considering it.

Leslie Howard's Big Box of Liszt

Literally for years I have dreamed of having the chutzpah to order this set, but satisfied myself with the individual volumes I bought along the way.  After all, these dozen or so sets have most of the works, and a number of rarely heard pieces, that could satisfy my desire to hear Howard play Liszt.  Still I sense an inexorable force pushing me onward into the vortex.

Do I really want to hear the same pianist play 99 CDs worth of Liszt?

Fact: I love Liszt's music.

Fact: Leslie Howard is an exceptional exponent of his music.

Therefore, I find myself about to cross the Liszt/Howard Rubicon.

Whatever else, it was a Herculean endeavor, and commands musical respect.
