I've only heard a couple of his Mahler some time back. What was it about them you don't like? I seem to remember the No.2 had quite a bit of praise heaped on it in its day.

I only enjoy some of his Mahler. The 2nd and 7th really get superb readings from him. Both performances were in Birmingham.

His Tenth is very good.  The Fifth is almost as good.
The Third, on the other hand, is the most boring awful recording of that symphony I have heard. No life to it at all.
The remainder of his Mahler is good enough, but there are enough great Mahler recordings that it is easy to do better.

BTW, to balance this out, his Shostakovich 4 is another must have recording.

Agreed. His 10th isn't shabby either.

Simon mentioned his Haydn.  I do not know if I ever heard that.

The disc of 60/70/90 is really good.

I still like his very early Mahler-Cooke 10 with Bournemouth.

Agreed on that, too. Other CBSO recordings I rank highly are the Walton 1st and Adams Harmonielehre.

This is at my local store for about $90.  I don't have any of it, and don't know much about Rattle.  He has always turned me off, but for petty reasons--there is just something a bit Kenny G about the way he is promoted.  Certainly it is not his fault he is photogenic, and being inordinately proud of his big hair shouldn't be considered a mark against his musical ability (right :-\)
I like that this is a mixed bag with some less canonical music in it, but don't know if Rattle, and this orchestra, are considered better at producing it than others.  Anyone planning on getting it?

Im not sure what the contents of this box are but Im pretty sure I have a fair bit of it already - I think very highly of Rattle's Mahler and Sibelius integrals. Rattle's Stravinsky is great too!

I think the earlier disc with Haydn's 60/70/90 and the Berlin with 88-92 + Sinfonia Concertante are among the better of these works available. Not worth buying a huge box for but certainly worth seeking out if one likes Haydn and does not insist on period instruments.

I have the double disc sets with the violin concertos and the last symphonies already ... and I see some of the other discs would still be around - hm, what to do? How's the presentation of the box (it's pretty cheap @ JPC until the end of the month), does it include all the booklet essays of the single releases?

And, since these are the deal breakers for me: how is the arias disc with Sieden (as wonderful as I think?), how are the arias with DiDonato, and how's the Requiem? (I've got plenty of recordings of the later ... though I want this type of thing, I more likely reach for Beethoven's Missa solemnis or for Mozart's great mass in c minor.)

I am considering this set, but it is rather pricey.... costs hover between the 80 and 90 euros mark....

A heads up by anyone who spots a bargain price would be appreciated! :)

Presto has a box set sale going at the moment. That one appears to be 33% off:

At 70 euros slightly less than prestoclassical, still not a bargain really:

I would be cautious on that one. The three Ansermet sets were released by Universal Italy, putting together all the separate releases that were part of the "Ansermet edition" on Eloquence Australia. It has not been unheard of (see the Richter box) for Universal to put out more complete (and more advantageous price-wise) versions for the world market. With this box set fever (which boils down to "squeeze every last buck out of the format before it disappears"), I wouldn't be surprised if some big shot green-lighted a "Complete Ansermet recordings" mega-brick one of these days. Be warned.

Thank you all! :) 70 euros at my own jpc, how could I have overlooked it?  ???
I didn't  know these Ansermet sets were Italian issues, but 70 euros for 32 CD's is still pretty good, and his French repertoire is mainly what I'm after.
I would welcome a Grumiaux Edition, however....  8)

Re: DiDonato, see review here / Best of 2014: http://ionarts.blogspot.com/2014/12/best-recordings-of-2014-6.html

Thanks! I guess I'll order the two discs (those with arias) separately, then!

Re: Ansermet, I've bought all three in the 40-50€ range, rather shortly after they'd been released. No idea how chances are that the price drops again ... nor any idea if a more complete (are the three missing out much?) box is feasible or not.

re: box set/Brilliant Classics sale at presto's:

Gabrieli: Complete Keyboard Music

Kuhnau: Complete Organ Music
http://www.prestoclassical.co.uk/r/Brilliant%2BClassics/95089BR

Guilmant: Complete Organ Sonatas

Michelangelo Rossi: Music for Organ and Harpsichord

Merula: Complete Organ Music
http://www.prestoclassical.co.uk/r/Brilliant%2BClassics/95252BR

.. and any others like that (complete keyboard/organ music sets)

Not asking about the Molardi Bach organ box as I've got Weinberger and Foccroulle lined up there already ... also not asking about the complete Clementi box, it's on the shelves, opened but unplayed ...

I guess many of these sets were discussed here already?

I could definitely recommend the Kuhnau by Molardi: interesting music that is matched by superb playing, a perfect instrument and well recorded.

Thanks, that one's actually already on my fixed to-buy-list, based on the other music of Kuhnau's I've heard so far (those "Frische Clavier-Früchte" are a hoot!)

I haven't listened to these recordings, but I saw they are available via Apple Music (so, I think, should be available through Spotify and other streaming services, too).

I also saw the complete set available at 7digital (320kbps MP3 + 320kbps M4A) for $9.99: https://hec.su/bR7P.

Just in case.  :)
