No libretti, otherwise awesome! The Vespers are very exuberant, I prefer Alessandrini / Concerto Italiano there, but it's a nice alternative.

Anybody familiar with these?

What is the story with the Venias label? A pirate label?

I do have a few collections from them and the sound is quite good considering that they are mostly recordings from the 50s.

I wonder if they are like Membran, taking advantage of that 50-year copyright loophole.
It's all good...

Very likely. Lots of recordings entering the public realm (depending on location and copyright laws) at this point in time.

If I could add a specific question on Splendeurs: does it have texts?  ::)

Texts are in the online booklet: https://www.outhere-music.com/en/albums/splendeurs-de-versailles-alpha-260/booklet

You're on top of things, North Star!   :)    Hmm, so there is no way to print it? It seems like one has to have one's screen active while listening to enjoy the music+booklet combo?

Yeah, it would be nice if the online booklet was printable  ::)

Well, there are most likely legal, and completely logical, reasons as to why a printing option is unavailable to consumers.

Just seen this reissue of both volumes of Rousset's WTC as a box set:

It's certainly cheaper than buying each volume separately. Worth considering?

Dammit, got in there too soon....  Yes, well worth considering..  :)

Though as a Rousset fan, my hope of the ultimate WTC recording didn't materialise.....  ::)
As is his want, Rousset had to try something new and intellectual stimulating.
He is kind of overthinking the whole thing, with some oddities and quirks as a result. Now and then a bit of a sombre mood too.
The recordings on Aparte are definitely a step down from the superlative quality on Ambroisie, less airy, more constricted.

Still, one of the best and certainly one of the most interesting WTCs on harpsichord available.

Tatiana Nikolayeva - Prague Recordings
Glowing review - MusicWeb: http://www.musicweb-international.com/classrev/2017/Aug/Nikolayeva_Prague_SU42162.htm

Interesting tidbits: "In Leipzig in July 1950 during that town's Bachfest, organised to mark the 200th anniversary of Bach's death that work became a turning point in her career as she offered the judges the opportunity to call for her to play whichever they asked for on the spot."

"...she had such a phenomenal memory that she never took any sheet music with her on tours, relying instead on that memory for her performances. "

Very short cds - about 90 minutes spread over two discs...    :'(

Baron Scarpia

I heard a review on "Fresh Air" (a public radio talk show, for those outside the US) which claimed that a recording of the Bach Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin by Johnny Gandelsman is one of the best ever.

[asin]B076TW4RTY[/asin]

Seems implausible, but one thing the reviewer mentions is that the famous Chaconne is played like a dance movement, rather than as a solemn dirge. That seems attractive.

Anyone heard this recording, or can think of a recording of this music in which the Chaconne is played briskly with a jaunty feel?

Has anyone (Brian?) yet had a chance to listen to the upcoming Hyperion disc of piano music by Suk?
