MDT is having a sale on Double Deccas at the moment ($9 a pop), so if there are any you think especially highly of, let me know and I'll throw 'em in the cart.  :)

Here are some I would consider as gems.

(Grumiaux)                                      (Brendel)

                                                     (Quartetto Italiano)

I would absolutely agree with this one (among other Philips two-fers as well) but I thought that the sale was just on Double Deccas?

The sale is on select Universal Doubles (including Philips DUO, Double Decca and DG doubles).

Should have included this one:

Brian

Have the Liszt/Szidon and Chopin/Arrau, but adding the Beethoven/Brendel, Schubert/Italiano, and maybe Kodaly/Dorati. Exciting recommendations gentlemen!  8)

EDIT: There is also a separate sale for EMI Gemini, so almost any 2 CD set you can imagine from a Major Label is covered...

I have most of these recordings and they are indeed great stuffs ...   ;D

I find Quartetto Italiano a bit on the soft side for Schubert. But there is as always firm relief from the Hagen Quartett.  8)
I love music. Sadly, I'm an audiophile too.

I'm very happy with my Melos Quartet set for Schubert, on DG label.  :)

Most people are happy with an incomplete set of Schubert's quartets.  I'm probably an exception.

Try as you might, you can never get a complete set of Schubert's quartets. The guy was quite happy composing incomplete works. ;D

I had a complete set once, Melos I think.  I found the early works uninvolving.  I also can't stand the Melos quartet.  The way DG records them, it sounds like they are playing stainless steel violins.

A guy with a reasonably expensive rig (current topdrawer Linn/Naim/Kef) says that the original Melos LPs sound good. So it's not the recording, alas.

I too don't get much out of the early Schubert quartets. But again I recommend everybody to lend an ear to the Hagens (in the grand ones), preferrably without knowing what band is playing. Mystery Quartet, anyone?

You must be on a personal crusade against DG, first Beethoven, now Schubert.
I'd say, reset your ears, stainless steel violins, indeed.

I had the set on a set of CDs that was mastered before 1990, which might have exacerbated things.  On the other hand, maybe your friend has a tin ear

I love their Trout (with Schiff). Earlier today I was listening to clips at JPC of Der Tod & das Mädchen. I heard a dozen performances: the Hagen is the one that immediately grabbed me, and I ordered it. The Takacs (recently discussed in the Purchase thread) I found too fast in the first movement (for my taste). The Busch and the Jerusalem I've added to my wishlist.

Me too. It's the only Hagen I have on my shelf. From the photo on the insert, it appears that the Hagen's were pretty young at that time. (about 25 years ago)

Did they record their Schubert QTs around the time that they recorded the Trout Quintet?
