Due to this thread I knew before I listened, but it still came as a pleasant surprise.

George--Duh! Now I get it: You presumed that good sound quality meant it was a more recent recording, so your statement was a way of saying that you think the sound quality is good.  Sorry for my denseness.

No problem.  :)

The Rowicki Dvorak cycle is coming back on the market.  I don't know if I need a third complete set, but it couldn't hurt could it?

I only have 4-6, which are wonderful.  My first choice for these.

Scarpia

The common wisdom is that the major labels don't release anything of interest these days.  I'm thinking this may be the rare exception:

It is a collection of works for oboe with orchestra by Bach, some as written by Bach, some transcribed or adapted for oboe.  I often find myself wishing that Bach had written more music for solo oboe, so I'm tempted.

I don't know about that.  In addition to the title you mention, there's the below, which I find extremely interesting.  So interesting that I'm certain I will buy it.

Saw that one, and passed.  The track listing seemed in large part to be Bach's greatest hits transcribed for oboe.  Of course, if you like oboe, that is probably a good thing...

But as a counter to Mayer, I'd propose this new release on DG:

which I bought last week. A little bit of "greatest hits" (Handel Sarbande, Pachelbel Canon, Bach Air) but mostly Baroque violin music by composers you may have never heard of.  I enjoyed it.

And I'd welcome suggestions about this one I'm considering--also a new release from DG

Delightful synchronicity.  I am listening to some nice excerpts from that album provided by Universal here http://www.iclassics.com/artist/releases/release.aspx?pid=63980&aid=8149

Addendum--I see that kishnevi appears to frequent that Universal site as well. ;)

Added addendum--Oh Gawd!  The Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring transcription track just came on.  Someone kill me, please. :(

Now, before we get on with that, kindly will all your HIP Bach and Mozart to me. Oh, and please ask MDT to redirect that Mozart disc to my address.

The YouTube preview was pretty cool, but I'd like to hear an extended clip rather than highlight mishmash before buying. $24 at MDT is a pretty good deal for a new release from one of the ex-major labels, especially since it comes with a DVD.

There is also this--

But yeah slim pickings huh?  And the major labels are going more and more for crossover. :-\

I want a Purcell Fairy Queen, and I think the one I'm going to get is this one by Christie and Les Arts Florissants:
.

But also, for the sake of Lorraine Hunt, I've wondered about this (which is significantly cheaper):

Anyone out there feel inclined to warn me of impending disaster or encourage me on a surefire route to Purcell Heaven?

I have the Norrington's set.  The performance was quite good IMO ...

I would avoid Norrington in this work; not a disaster, but nothing special at all.

Maybe you could consider this excellent live recording by Ottavio Dantone and his people:

That's an interesting suggestion - I'm certainly tempted by the presence of Carolyn Sampson on that recording. There are lots of samples of both the Christie and the Dantone on Amazon, so I'll do some comparative listening and try to make some sort of decision. Thanks.
