Walcha: that's who you need. I think his English Suites are my favourite, by far.  And you need the pre war recording of Landowska playing the A minor.

Both very different from Alan Curtis, for sure.

I think you are right.  While I have two versions of Walcha's Bach Complete Organ Works, I only have some JS Bach Harpsichord and Violin works by him and Szeryng on a Philips LP.  The Landowska's box has been on my shopping list forever ...     ;D

In fact -- here's a link to the Walcha.   Both Premont and I love them, so it will be nice to spread the word. It's awful that "hard to find" should get in the way of experiencing them (I hope you enjoy them  :))

For what it's worth, I like Gilbert and Leonhardt too.

Be careful with the Big Landowska box on RCA -- IMO it's the pre war recordings that are the most interesting and most of the RCA stuff is rather late. I'll upload the pre war A minor English Suite if you are interested.

Maybe this is the right time for me to thank the people here who have helped me discover these harpsichord performances.

I do think these Walcha's classic may find their way into Newton Classics, as I have found many previously OOP Philips recordings being re-issued by this new label ...

BTW,  Thanks for your offer.  I think I am still a Luddite that I am not comfortable with downloaded music files, regardless of whether they are lossless or not.  That is why I am breaking my own rule lately - searching for OOP used CD's.  Yes, there are still a bunch of us who want to be able to hold the physical media in our hands ...      ;D

It can be unexpectedly (and often) cheaper as well, which doesn't make much sense to me, but there you go. It is somewhat label sensitive as well, so some labels ARE much better deals on mp3/lossless, but others less so or not at all (and quite the opposite).
Be kind to your fellow posters!!

Obviously, record companies cannot charge people as much for the music files.  I think the whole issue is more than just convenience.  I can just as well rip my own music files from my collection of CD's or other media (have many open reels as well).

Here is an EMI recording of Walcha on the harpsichord, though the sound may not be as good as his DG recordings ...

Austbo is an excellent choice, not just in Grieg, but especially Scriabin... then Messiaen... then said Grieg... then Janacek. A much underrated pianist.

Thanks. I have his Scriabin piano sonatas cycle (on Brilliant Classics) and like it.

I posted this in the romantics forum. I thought I'd post it here to see if anyone wanted to comment on it. I'm interested in getting some thoughts/perspective on this curious recording. I'm thinking of purchasing it.

Contemplating this (Mendelssohn Symphonies; Dohnyani/VPO):

On sale for $29 at arkiv. Anyone familiar with it. I'm digging Dohnyani lately. Wouldn't mind some driven and transparent Mendelssohn from him, if that is what this is.

New copies are as low as $19 on Amazon.

More transparent than driven.  I like them.  I'm severe tempted by the Fey series, but each symphony is padded with string symphonies rather than paired with another string symphony, the high cost has kept me away.

Neither transparent nor driven are the words I would primarily associated with Dohnányi 's Mendelssohn, but I do rank it as my favorite set by a considerable margin. It contains the best 2nd Symphony I've heard... the playing is absolutely amazing... and where Karajan (also exquisite in Mendelssohn, believe it or not) is a little... well... not "thick", per se, (because HvK isn't that in Mendelssohn, either) but 'heavily lyrical', Dohnányi is classically-propelled. In short: Bargain and a stunner.

I'd get it, if I felt I needed more Mendelssohn ; )

Mandryka, thanks for this very generous upload! :)

Just browsed the Green set on Amazon which is coming out at the end of the month - presumably it is the same as the White set on the right?.
I am tempted, very tempted, to get the White set even though the sound is in mono and the performances are'nt meant to be that great as I don't have many historical recordings in my collection and am intruiged by this one!.

Just added the Dohnanyi Mendelssohn Symphony set to my collection (only my 2nd box of these works) - bought at Amazon USA for the price above (plus $3 S/H) - excellent performances & recordings - no complaints for the cost of admission!  :D

Conor, I think we've talked about these early mono VL recordings before, but let me tell you that I think they only serve as historical documents, which, for me, music is about enjoyment and I don't really have a nagging urge to hear VL conducting a mediocre orchestra while seriously ill. This, to me, isn't a sound purchase. Have you checked out Roberto Duarte's VL recordings on Marco Polo? These are essential purchases in my opinion for VL fans. Also the set on BIS is a no-brainer, but I know you already have one set with the Bachianas Brasileiras, but this set contains the Choros as well, which I highly recommend. Then there is are two recordings of Forest of the Amazon that are you may want checkout as well. Two other sets to checkout are the set of solo piano music on Naxos and the symphonies on CPO. Both are fantastic.

It's your money, of course, but I just thought you should know some of your other options.
