I am thinking about buying the Busch quartet records of late Beethoven.  How do they compare with the Budapest and others.  I have never heard them play.

Judging by bits I heard on the radio - a very good disc.

After listening fully to Wagner's Siegfried (Solti/Wiener Phil/London Records), which completed my listening to the entire Ring Cycle (yes, I listened to Gotterdammerung before Siegfried), I'm in!   :)  Meaning, a fan of Wagner.  The music from The Ring is incredible.

I will be looking for that Ring Cycle with Sir George Solti/Wiener.  Hopefully, it will not be too pricey.  I've seen some Ring Cycles range from $40 to $180, depending on the label, conductor, etc.  But, I'm totally sold on getting the Solti!!

That's one of my favorite discs of the past year, but I have to say that the coupling strikes me as rather odd.

I think Abbado has only recorded Bruckner's 4th one, with the VPO. And I also think they have the same catalogue number on the cover. ;)

That settles it, then.  8)  I'd hate to double-purchase!

Yes join the group, ChamberNut  :)!  Wagner is indispensable and his Ring Cycle is heavenly!  There are so many GREAT Ring Cycles out on the market.  I own 2 COMPLETE RINGS (Levine MET DVD) and of course SOLTI (VPO) which I intend on taking with me to the grave.  OH yeah, make no mistake about it, much like the Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt who intended on taking their treasures with them to the after life,  they are going to bury me in the ground with that Solti recording!

Excellent choice!  John Culshaw and Gordon Parry made a great recording that merits the copious praise it's received over the past several decades, and Solti, the WP, and the generally fine cast make the best case for Wagner that I know.

Well, I've been spending the last few days looking through the reviews of the new issue of Fanfare (July-August) - great front cover w/ a pic of the mezzo-soprano Jennifer Larmore, a definite improvement for this magazine!  ;) :D

All of these are of interest to me - only 1 or 2 would duplicate recordings that I already own, so most would be new to me!  Any comments would be appreciated - thanks.  :)

I've said it before, but I'll say it again: Get the Keilberth set on Testament.

Marvin is right, there are a lot of good sets out there these days (I don't know that I'll go so far as to say that there are a lot of great sets, though), and, once you've digested Solti, you'll want to get Keilberth's Ring (Bayreuth, 1955). The cast members who overlap with Solti are in fresher voice and, considering the roles that don't overlap, the preference usually goes to Keilberth (James King's Siegmund is one exception where Solti gets the medal).

I'll also just say that the engineering for Keilberth's set is a little more natural than Culshaw's stereo spectacular, great achievement that it is, which can, however, be a little much.

I'll just say this: Buy Solti and keep Keilberth in the back of your mind. You won't regret purchasing either one or, better still, both.

has anyone heard this? The programme is wild. Mostly interested in the 3rd sonata

Hector

Ricci's 'La prigione di Edinburgo.'

No idea what this is about but a review I read made it sound good. Excerpts only on Opera Rara, one CD.

Recommends itself to anybody interested in tuneful Italian opera. That's me ;D
