How good is the set pictured above? I'm not the one to buy the 'Best of ' type of discs or boxes, but this set does not appear to be like the rest.

Details

Also, it has the complete set of Brandenburgs, and the Suites, and the Italian Concerto - works that are, sadly, yet to make it to my shelf.

Mostly good performers but besides the inclusion of the complete Brandenburgs and Orchestral Suites, the composition of the set seems rather haphazard: one of this, one of that. Would seem frustrating. Plus the fact that undoubtedly not all pieces will not be in your preferred performance.

Yes, that's true. Moreover, I think I'll be happier with just one of Leonhardt's Goldbergs... not that I don't like that one I have now, but what am I going to do with two? ;D The price seems good for the set, though.

Thanks for your reply.

...........In any event it will be interesting to see how Abbado handles a period instrument ensemble.  I also tend to wonder when he recorded this as all of his concert engagements were canceled last year because of ill health.

Hi Bunny - not sure that I can answer your questions; I've not ordered the Abbado recordings of the Mozart Violin Concertos, yet; however, the Fanfare review is reprinted on the Arkiv Website HERE; also, MusicWeb HERE has an excellent review of these discs, which were recorded in Bologna, Italy in November 2007 - hope this helps - Dave  :)

Edit - after reading the MusicWeb review, put in an Amazon order for these Mozart works -  :D

Has anybody some info about these recordings. The box is going for 30 euro, is it worth considering it?

I think it has been relatively well received, but if price is an issue you gan get cheaper boxes: Jansons on EMI (bought mine recently for 16 GBP) or Maxim Shostakovich on Supraphon at 19 GBP at

To cover all the recordings I am considering I might need my own thread, but found this new issue particularly enticing:

Now I'll just have to wait for the release date (in December).

Thanks Erato, I will consider Maxim too!

Robert Schumann w/ Kempff (4-CD box set; $22 from Caiman) - I already have a number of performers in these solo piano works, including Hamelin & Wurtz (both of whom I enjoy in this repertoire); the works included on the Kempff set would nicely 'fill-out' a number of pieces now missing from my collection - comments please -  :)

Peter Tchaikovsky - Symphonies et al (5-CD set on EMI) w/ Rostropovich - 1977 recordings; already own these works, but the Fanfare review reprinted HERE was just superlative; also, only $21 from Caiman -  :D

You should get some Richter playing Schumann

Kullervo

I've heard good things about this composer — Can anyone tell me what his style is like?

William Alwyn (1905-85) is one of the more neglected British composers of the 20th century; my introduction to him was the Chandos disc above - since then, I've acquired a half dozen more recordings, mainly chamber & orchestral works, including the 3-CD symphony package, also on Chandos (and at a reduced priced vs. their single offerings).

Alwyn's style is more late Romantic w/ influences of Debussy - thus, his composing belies his dates somewhat; if you like Bax (and RV Williams to a lesser extent), then Alwyn is worth exploring; however, I would probably suggest starting w/ an orchestral recording, which should include Lyra Angelica, a beautiful harp concerto - good luck in your choice(s) -  :)

Dave,
I have what I believe to be the same set (different box though):

...and am very pleased with it. I have heard a variety of comments, ranging from "excellent" to :Kempff isn't really a Schumann-ist" but my own opinion of Kempff is that he can play anything from Beethoven onwards with passion and technical precision that puts the music to best advantage. He is easily in my Top 5 pianists of his generation, and he doesn't disappoint here. :)

MDT has it for about $14.   With shipping it comes to about $17.  I'm tempted just for the early symphonies alone, but I already have plenty of Tchaikovsky.

The same forces now have a Prokofiev Symphonies box out.

This is just out:

http://www.amazon.fr/Symphonies-Complete-Comp/dp/B001DETD8W

but
Note: There are three recordings of Tchaikovsky’s complete symphonies conducted by Evgeny Svetlanov: two studio recordings, for Melodiya (USSR) and for Canyon Classics (Japan), one live recording in Tokyo for Canyon Classics

I might consider this, that's if I would know which cycle they opted for, live one on Canyon always received superlative reviews, that would be nice.

I haven't heard anything remotely decent from the batons of Rostropovich. I think most people just think he's Russian and therefore must be good at conducting Russian music. I haven't heard this particular cycle but if I have to place my bet it has "superfluous" written all over it.

I ordered it. Classicstoday.com seem to like it and for $3 per cd what do you have to lose.

In a spanish magazine on music, Scherzo, that set had a very good review. I thought that set was more expensive.

Gurn - thanks for the comments above; I'm also assuming that the 'new' 4-CD release is the same - your box set received 4+*/5 on Amazon w/ two low ratings (both had comments complaining about the poor ratings); the reviewer in Third Ear did not like Kempff is some of the Schumann repertoire; generally good comments from the Penguin Guide - can't imagine being really disappointed in that set, esp. since the works played will 'fill-in' the missing pieces nicely for me!  Dave  :D

You can get it from jpc:

in other places it will cost about $130.
