Should I, shouldn't I?

Save the money and put it towards the eventual pleasure of hearing that combo live. THAT's worth it... their recordings (so far), don't communicate what makes them special at all.

The never-ending barrage of mediocrity that is Dudamel. Save your money and buy Klemperer or Harnoncourt or Karajan or...

Most interesting, thanks, Jens.

I've got most of the golden oldies.  I'm up for something newer.  A shoot-out between Nagano and Dudamel just sounds fun.

If you're in for a something new in terms of Eroica, have you heard Paavo Jaervi's killer Third?

Yes.  While good, I find it too small in scale.  I want a modern big band take.

Then go the Chailly-route, perhaps?? http://ionarts.blogspot.com/2011/12/best-recordings-of-2011-9.html

Got that, too.  Very good, as is his entire cycle.  Picked up the Wyn Morris reissue at the same time.  Also very good.  I admit a preference for big and perhaps a bit slow.  Klemperer and Giulini loom large in this work for me.  Hoping for something on that scale.

The next obvious choices would be Thielemann and the not-so-new Barenboim. http://ionarts.blogspot.com/2011/12/listen-what-cat-dragged-in-thielemanns.html

Don't care for the Barenboim, and I have misgivings about plopping down for Thielemann based on prior listening experiences.  Do like both recent-ish Abbado recordings.  Think I may be the only person on the planet who prefers the first BPO cycle over the second.

Absolute, total agreement. Todd, have you heard Haitink? I'm afraid Abbado and Dausgaard (as small-scale as Jarvi) are my go-to Third Symphonies from this century.

I don't have this one. I'm thinking of picking it up myself.

What about the Symphony 6 CD?

Already have it and have owned for quite some time now. It's a great recording. Duarte is a Villa-Lobos specialist and all of his VL recordings on Marco Polo are worth picking up.

Have the Thielemann, and I'm sorry to say it's a waste of money.  The Chailly is an absolute corker, the Thielemann an absolute bore (in as much as a Beethoven cycle can be boring).

I tend to like Dudamel more than some other folks here, so I'll undoubtedly get it when it comes out.

I hope you can at least scrape some of that gunk off from the CD once it arrives because it will be completely coated in Dud-o-mel slime. :)

No.  I've never had a great deal of success with Haitink, including LvB concertos.  Maybe I'll give him a shot.

I find Serebrier a wonderful Glazunov conductor.  Unfortunately, I already have four of the discs.  Regardless, it's great that the box has been unleashed.
