The piano concertos are available separately on Brilliant, I got this for 5 €, as that BIS original box was obscenely expensive in comparison. Superb performances and recording quality, and the compositions are very nice, too.

I wanted the symphonies and other orchestral works too, Karlo. I already bought the box set and it was $30. Not a bad deal. It would cost you more than this to buy the recordings individually.

Yeah, I guessed as much. I got that 2-fer because it was so cheap that it was just silly, and didn't feel that I needed so much Tcherepnin. And $30 is a lot less than what it costs in here.

I'm the kind of person who sees something for a good price and if it's something I want I'll buy it. It's as simple as that really. Of course, I've done some listening to Tcherepnin before I bought the set and I've actually had my eye on that set for a few years.

I, too, had been listening to those recordings from Spotify quite a lot, when I noticed the two-fer. I should like to have the symphonies, too, but that would have cost about 30 € more, and I thought I'd rather buy other music with that.
And I don't think many disagree with your first sentence, other than pointing out that most people have limited funds (and time).

One further note about the Tcherepnin.  I don't have any of those recordings.  In fact I don't own a single recording of anything by Tcherepnin.  But I do think the pianist in the BIS set, Ogawa, did a good job with the integral piano works set BIS released last year, so I'd be interested to hear Ogawa in the concertos.

Other - Lupu/Perahia with a wonderful coupling of Mozart's Sonata for Two Pianos, K 448.  For sure, it's a desert island disc, and I don't usually care much for either Lupu or Perahia.

Therefore, you have two reasons to not purchase this:

I mean big boxes and Perahia.  ;D

This just popped up among the Amazon offerings marketed atop some of the forum pages:

I don't know anything about the music.
I'm not even sure why I'm considering it.
That is, why I haven't already ordered a copy...or two...or twenty. ;)

David - impressive cover art to say the least!  ;)  :D   A larger image below even increases one's yearning -  ;D

Will certainly keep you informed, Jeffrey once I have heard them.

In the meantime, my mouth is drooling over these expensive Japanese imports of Ifukube's orchestral works:

Well,  I can't say I'm familiar with Ifukube, or any of those other Japaneses composers you've been listening to.  But I have to admit a work entitled "Godzilla vs. Kingghidora" does not make my heart go pitter-pat with the lust to hear it  :)

I would be interested in that CD of cello concertos you posted earlier if when you get it.

It's important to bear in mind that Ifukube was a highly respected classical composer, but he also wrote film music. The film music in that particular recording acts more like an orchestral suite than anything. Don't be fooled, Jeffrey. He's a serious composer and one of Japan's most well-known composers. He easily eclipses Takemitsu IMHO. What I admire about Ifukube is that he didn't abandon structure and rhythmic drive in his music. Takemitsu too often just sounds like a giant wash to me most of the time. Ifukube was a true composer through and through.

You know very well that they will be three times as much a few years down the road, as most Japanese pressings are. :-\  Do you by chance have a link to the one with Godzilla music on it, MI?

Yes, you're probably right. Yeah, Bill this recording has an orchestral suite from a Godzilla movie:

Ifukube, also arranged three works titled Symphonic Fantasia from various Godzilla films as well, so you might want to check those out. Truth be told, I'm much more interested in his concert works.

Not sure that I will spend $33 since I already have this gem on the shelf:

I understand, Bill. The reason I bought that particular series is because I'm interested in hearing more of his serious concert music, which he wrote a good bit of.  In Japan, he's respected as an all-around influential composer and, while his film music may have given him popular status, Ifukube believe himself to be first and foremost a serious classical composer.

Another complete Nielsen Symphonic Cycle {I already have the Blomstedt}, this one featuring Kuchar and the Janacek Philharmonic. For about 15 dollars on Amazon, it is extremely tempting!

Buy with confidence (and with little damage to your bank balance  ;D )  Each symphony is superbly performed with some amazing brass detail. I have ten complete cycles and this is the one that goes to the desert island. I completely agree with Hurwitz:  "Kuchar's conducting really does sweep the board."

May I point out once again that this cycle is part of the Brilliant 100 CD box, among others that have been hearted here on GMG--Barshai's Shostakovich,  Fischer's Haydn, Blomstedt's Beethoven,  and Goodman's Schubert, among others that haven't been mentioned here.   Admittedly, I paid a hundred dollars or so less than the current Amazon MP price, but it's obviously something to keep an eye for (especially if you want more than one of the others)
