Hi,

Not sure if this is the right place for this, but I'd like to purchase a recording of Tchaikovsky's complete ballets and was wondering if someone could make a recommendation. A single set would be great, but not a requirement. Thanks,

Joe

PS- If it's not the right place, please let me know.

Hi Joe. It certainly isn't the wrong place. ;) Although you may like to know that a more specific thread has been created for Pyotr Ilyich's ballets here. :)
Regards,
Navneeth

Hey, Joe.

I have no recommendation for a set . . . I wound up picking them up one at a time.

I do very much enjoy these (I shan't recommend a Nutcracker, as there are many fine recordings to select from):

Bilson's cycle did include the concertos for two and three pianos. Melvyn Tan and Robert Levine are the other fortepianists. I don't know if they were included in the box (I have single discs of the cycle).
Sarge

If you quote me more generously, though...

Quote1.) Uchida's cycle is not incomplete. It just doesn't include the sonata orchestrations (1-4) Mozart made of other composers's works.  They should be in every C.P.E.Bach collection, but are hardly mandatory in a set of Mozart Piano Concertos. ... András Schiff ... made the same repertoire choices... , ditto Immerseel and Bilson and probably a few others.

So no orchestrations for Bilson, but the multiple concertos. The box does include them.

If you don't mind older recordings with less than perfect sound, this is a bargain:

I see The new erato beat me to it.

Don't worry, this is exactly the place for it.

The new erato and Florestan,

Thanks, this one caught my eye as I was browsing Amazon this morning.

Thanks karl, I enjoy Dorati very much in Bartok but haven't heard him in much else.

Does anyone know if there's an optimal (-sound) edition of Mozart's DON GIOVANNI by Furtwängler from the 1950 Salzburg Festival (w/Gobbi, Schwarzkopf, Welitsch, Seefried, Kunz, et al)?  The one I've been looking at is from Opera d'Oro, apparently published ~2001; but I understand that that label's quality control can be terribly hit/miss, though I've heard that they have improved somewhat, recently.

EMI, Laudis.
Haven't heard, but also wouldn't trust Opera d'Oro and especially not Price-Less.

I have that recording, and haven't played it for years.   The sound is actually better than most other Opera d'Oro releases I have,  but that's not saying much.

Picked this one up today for starters.

I recall that one being a good one, Joe, but it's been years since I listened to it. Sleeping Beauty is my favorite Tchaikovsky ballet.

EMI, I have it on the shelves:

Haven't listened to it for a long, long time...

It sounds weird and definitely off, but FW would't be FW if it still wouldn't fascinate and the level of singing is supreme. 8)

Thanks Que and Jeffrey for the Mozart/Furtwangler feedback.  The only copies of the EMI edition I have run across are insanely expensive, but I will cross my fingers that we'll see a nice EMI[/Warner?] FW edition in the near future; it seems definite that there are some other EMI goodies that need to be reissued as well....seems like there were some live Bruckner performances that might not be elsewhere available (Cairo etc etc?) which I have heard legendary foo-foo about.  I do have the FW GIOVANNI w/Siepi from ~1953 and it's bad-ass....but yes, I think I understand what you mean about "definitely off".

But his Freischütz is right on the money, if you're interested in that kind of stuff! :) Strongly recommended.

I am interested in the Magnus Lindberg box that you mention...do you have any more info on it?  Is it distinct from this one:

[asin]B004KDO31A[/asin]

I have this ~brown/white 4cd, which includes the massive "Kraft" from that single Ondine disc you list, but not the "Piano Concerto" (nor, apparently, most of his other concertos....here's hoping those are collected in another set).  I really like his music, but I don't know how much of it you'd need.  I find "Kraft" remarkably powerful, and I've liked almost every other piece from this 4cd as well, about half them I've liked quite well.

My n00b opinion on opera is just about worthless, but the Karajan BOHEME you mention is the only one I have, and I love it; I got it as part of that funnily-titled DEFINITIVE COLLECTION Puccini box (blood-red satin!) simply because opera veteran friends kept mentioning the performances included in that set, and because I found a good deal on it....and it has paper librettos included, *gasp*.  Naturally I will be getting that legendary Beecham eventually, though; probably in the Naxos Historical edition.

Thanks for this recommendation; I actually have this recording in the Furtwangler LEGACY megalith, but I have not listened to it yet.   :-[   Ah surfeit

One can never have too much Furtwängler.  8)
