Other than Mr. Henning having listened to more than half of the Haydn, has anyone actually listened to a COMPLETE or Haydn symphony cycle be it Dorati, Fischer or otherwise? I made my way to around symphony number 20 on the Fischer set and just can't go on anymore. They are all interesting works but I can't listen to 30+ cds of them at a time.

Waves hand.
Done Fischer and Davies in seriatim.
And the incomplete Hogwood and Goodman sets.
Usually one CD a day.

I couldn't fault Davies or Fischer, but now that Decca has issued the Hogwood/Bruggen/Dantone set, my PI preference kicks in, and I would suggest that first. (I have it, but as separate sets.)

I have listened to all Haydn symphonies (and all quartets, trios and piano sonatas) but never to one such box all the way through in a coherent time period. When I bought the Fischer box I had probably heard 60% or so already in other recordings. So there are Fischer discs (especially of the late ones) I never listened to.

The closest to listening to "all" was probably the piano sonatas with Dershavina when I might have listened to the whole box (but it is only 10 disc or so) in about two weeks.

Yes, I have listened to my complete Hogwood and my Fischer cycles as well as my incomplete Goodman cycles a number of times. As you say the music is interesting but I have found that the way to do it is in manageable bite sizes of one or two discs at a time. That is the way that I have avoided Haydn fatigue.

How did this happen?  :blank:
And.... what happens next?

only $25 including shipping...

Best Violin Concerto / Romances... but the Symphonies are not everyone's cup of tea; HIP but with Barenboim tempos. Not as lively; certainly not as 'radical' as other HIPsters in Beethoven or as tip-toe rocking as his Schubert... but very musical.

Today, I've been listening to Samuel Barber, mainly orchestral works - I've not added or culled my 'small' collection of his works (about a half dozen discs) in many years; SO, exploring the Barber offerings on Amazon and saw the Naxos 6-CD set w/ Marin Alsop for $20 on the MP - would appreciate any comments - thanks.  Dave :)

A pretty good set, Dave. There are better performances of the concerti with the exception of the Capricorn Concerto, which receives a great performance. Alsop does handle the other orchestral works incredibly well.

Edit: While this performance of Knoxville, Summer of 1915 is good, it's not as good as Upshaw's (w/ Zinman) on Nonesuch. That remains my reference recording.

Hi John - thanks for your comments above; I own the Upshaw recording and the concerto discs shown below - appears that the Alsop set would be a good addition - I could 'cull out' 2 or 3 other CDs - let me visit the Fanfare Archive and review their comments, if available.  Dave :)

No problem, Dave. If I may take the liberty and share with you my favorite recordings of Barber's concerti for violin, cello, and piano:

Violin Concerto - Hahn/Wolff
Cello Concerto - Gastinel/Brown
Piano Concerto - Browning/Slatkin

Any thoughts? I already have the Barenboim, the Perahia and (some of) the uncomplete Serkin/Abbado , but no fortepiano set.
Alternatively I may wait for the Brautigam on BIS to be completed, but I've read terrible reviews on the orchestral side...

I'm considering giving away/selling as much as I can from my collection. I already have 5 boxes crammed with discs, only halfway through the great Fall clean up. The total will be in excess of 1000 discs. Hopefully 1500.

How do you determine what to weed out? And what percentage would that be? Unless your collection is HUGE, >1000 discs would be a considerable fraction...
I seem to be unable to do such a big Spring/Fall cleaning. I have a box with a few dozen discs to sell/give away but as selling is slow to impossible and even trading/giving away for free slowish I can hardly be bothered. And to get rid of, say another 200, would not really change the size of the collection. For this it would have to be 500-1000 but I am to attached to the stuff to do that.

I feel the same way... they are my babies. What I do do, however, is trade in discs that I have multiple copies of (happens, with boxes and such) or really don't like. The only rule is that if I bring a box to the used CD store, I may only come back with said box 1/3 full... that way I make my collection more interesting to me, of higher, denser quality, and I can free at least a little bit space on the shelves. But to give away 1000+... Esepcially when it is so soberingly little what one can get for CDs, these days... Often enough I don't even know anyone among my acquaintances who would be truly happy if they received a very nice recording on CD as a gift...  :(

Personally, I don't think I could so something like this. Now, culling around 100 or so recordings might be easier, but these will recordings of music I just don't like or unnecessary duplication. What are you going to do with all of those recordings you don't want? Sell them? Donate them?

Hello - I have 5 sets of Wolfie's Piano Concertos (Anda, Schiff, & Zacharias on MI) & Sofronitzki and Bilson on fortepiano - I find the Bilson somewhat out of balance w/ the fortepiano sounding in the background & the Sofronitzki somewhat lacking in the orchestral accompaniment (but I would certainly not say 'terrible') - I'm looking forward to a 'box release' of Brautigam and would probably do a replacement.  Dave :)
