I understand that Sakari Oramo will succeed Jiri Belohlavek as Principal Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Belohlavek's current contract expires this year.

This is good news :) Oramo was a considerable success at the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and has done/is doing good work with the Finnish Radio Symphony orchestra and the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra.

Yes, this is very good news indeed. I really hope that he can put out some more recordings though. I haven't seen much from Belohlavek besides the recent Martinu cycle.

Start listening to Beethoven then. You can try the piano concerti with Paul Lewis. :P

Well I enjoyed Belohlavek's tenure enough during my time in London  8)

Have not heard too much Oramo on disc, but I have heard a two-CD set called "The Sakari Oramo Collection," a sort of hits anthology, which I was not keen on.

Oramo excels in Modern music. I found him rather dull and lifeless in Sibelius for example. Give him some Lindberg, however, and be prepared to be enchanted.

The time I saw Oramo was in a BBC Prom last year when he conducted Sibelius 6, the Grieg concerto and Nielsen 4 with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic. It was a really moving, beautiful concert. Oramo is a rather excellent conductor, very expressive and seems to connect with the orchestra very well,  so I look forward to his time here in London!

I didn't like any of his Sibelius recordings unfortunately. I would like to hear him in more Contemporary Scandinavian music. As I said, his Lindberg is excellent. I would like to hear him do some Salonen too.

I was at that concert! I shall never forget it, because that was the night when riots broke out in my neighborhood. I got a text halfway through the Grieg concerto asking if I was safe - the first I heard about it. I think that circumstance justifies my reading a text message during a concert - that, and I thought the reading (w/ Alice Sara Ott) was rather dull.  :-\

MI, I've heard Oramo's Sibelius 5 and I really dislike it.

Yes, that would be good. Who, apart from Salonen himself, has conducted Salonen? ;)

It's a shame we couldn't have met! I was with my dad in the choir seats. Yes... I didn't find out about the riots I was back home and the news was on...
Well, it wasn't the greatest Grieg concerto I have heard but I thought it had some really wonderful moments from Ott.
