I've just found you guys from a post on TC.
I'm a novice when it comes to classical
I've been aware of it for years, with a couple of the old favourites
Now though I've found "real music" and am really enjoying my voyage of discovery
My none classical  musical tastes are very varied:
Hendrix, Satriani, Jethro Tull
The Doors, Jefferson Airplane
Black Sabbath
Tangerine Dream
Billie Holiday, Stevie Ray Vaughan
Charlie Parker
et al

Hello cwarchc, and welcome. Don't worry about being a novice--just dive in and enjoy a ton of fascinating music, with recommendations from many interesting people here. (And besides, you'll find many posters here who also share your love of Hendrix and the others on your list.)

Glad to hear that you have some Mahler. The 9th is an absolutely incredible piece, and Solti is an excellent Mahlerian! :)

I highly recommend to you Solti's recording of the 1st symphony, Chailly's recording of the 5th symphony, and Bernstein's (the later one of the DG label) or Solti's  recording of the 6th symphony at this point. :)
