I know there is a thread about favorite sitcoms already, but I didn't see one about television shows in general. I feel like I've seen all of the good stuff already, so I'm trying to discover new shows to watch. Here are my favorite shows of all time:

1. The Wire
2. The Sopranos
3. Deadwood
4. Peep Show
5. Arrested Development
6. Mad Men
7. Garth Marenghi's Darkplace
8. Breaking Bad
9. Seinfeld
10. The Shield
11. Curb Your Enthusiasm
12. I'm Alan Partridge
13. Twin Peaks
14. The Mighty Boosh
15. Treme
16. The Office (UK)
17. Jeeves and Wooster
18. The Daily Show with Jon Stewart
19. Louie
20. Black Books

Here are my favorite shows of all time:
Some of those shows I know are supposed to be good, but I've never had the chance to watch them. Jon Stewart I watched for a bit one day last week and that's some funny stuff.

The only TV I watch now is occasional episodes of The Big Bang Theory (or whatever I catch my family watching), but when I used to watch TV, favorite shows included Heroes, Everybody Hates Chris, King of Queens, and a whole jumble of sitcoms.

Actually, nowadays I do watch TV, still... online. Basically just South Park, Family Guy, NBA games and anime.
As for anime series, I could give you an enormous list of favorites, but ahem... I'll try to limit it. Or maybe not.

Elfen Lied
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
Death Note
Welcome to the NHK
Kino's Journey
Serial Experiments Lain
Paranoia Agent
Monster
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Clannad After Story
Gantz
The Tatami Galaxy
Code Geass
Steins;Gate
Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica
Baccano!
Cowboy Bebop
Eve no Jikan
Higashi no Eden
Spice and Wolf
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Nichijou

But... I've been good and haven't watched anything lately. A good anime series is just way too addictive and powerful, which is why it's almost surprising I'm not suffering from withdrawal symptoms.

Serial Experiments Lain

Cowboy Bebop

I havent seen many anime series, more films for sure, but these are two that I find to be exemplary examples of great television, not just for anime, but for all television.

ATM I'd say life's too short to spend making lists of TV shows.

If you are looking for new stuff, here a few to consider (not really knowing your likes):
- Dead Like Me (toilet bowl falls from space, kills young girl, who becomes a reaper). Strange, but I really enjoyed this (2 seasons on DVD). Works surprisingly well.
- Pushing Daisies (guy brings things to life that he touches, but if he touches again they die again; he touches dead crush). Strange, but what characters! 2 seasons on DVD.
- Kavanagh QC (British, with John Thaw, who played Inspector Morse (if you haven;t seen Inspector Morse, well add that to the list too)). Good acting!
- Wire in the Blood (more like movies in length), psychological and dark. May not be for everyone, but well done nonetheless.
Be kind to your fellow posters!!

Thanks for the suggestions. I did try Dead Like Me a few years ago but I never really got into it. I haven't tried Pushing Daisies, but I think it was done by the same people who did Wonderfalls, which I liked quite a bit while it was on the air.

I haven't seen the other shows, but I have heard good things about Wire in The Blood, so I might give that a try this week. I remember Mark Corrigan (David Mitchell's character) on Peep Show always talking about watching "Morse" but I didn't realize it was a real show.

My top 10 have yet to change, all of which are no longer running, save re-runs:

1. Andy Griffith (Don Knotts' years only)
2. M*A*S*H
3. Star Trek: TOS
4. X-Files
5. Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes series
6. Cadfael Series
7. Columbo
8. Star Trek: TNG
9. Night Stalker-The Original Series
10.Hogan's Heroes

I might add the CSI series when Grissom was a character and the Inspector Lewis series....loved those as well.

I see your point!  And I take that as a call to brevity (not that I expect anyone else to take it for the same):

US:

Columbo
Get Smart
The Addams Family
The Twilight Zone

UK:

Blackadder
Jeeves and Wooster
Monty Python
The Avengers
The Prisoner

Oh, we love Morse in my house! He is a curmudgeon, but the style of the whole thing is great and so are the characters. Very well written! Acting is great and Morse is a huge fan of classical music, so the music throughout is excellent. And Oxford gets some great shots too. There are a lot of episodes, most the length of movies.

I need to watch me some more Morse; chap here at the office put me onto that show.

I don't watch huge quantities of TV, but as I compile the list I notice that the ones that stay with me are, oddly enough, largely the ones I saw as reruns as a kid (and are shockingly similar to Bogie's & Karl's).....

Batman (Adam West)
The Wild Wild West
Star Trek TOS
Sherlock Holmes (Jeremy Brett)
Nero Wolfe (A&E)
Columbo
MASH
Star Blazers
The Addams Family
Battlestar Galactica (remake)
Monty Python
Get Smart
The Man from UNCLE
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (I like my TV extra cheesy, can ya tell?)
The Colbert Report
Mythbusters
Babylon 5
The man that hath no music in himself,
Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils.
The motions of his spirit are dull as night,
And his affections dark as Erebus.
Let no such man be trusted.

These off the top of my head:

Dick Van Dyke Show
Seinfield
NYPD Blue
Law & Order (orginal)
Man from U.N.C.L.E.
I Spy
Rocky & Bullwinkel (just bought the complete box)
Mission Impossible

:)

Oh, it's not that damn short  ;D

A baker's dozen (and leaving out the sitcoms I listed in another thread):

The Avengers (especially the Emma Peel years)
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
Star Gate Atlantis
Babylon 5
Ally McBeal
Gilmore Girls
Firefly
South Park
Mad Men
The Closer
Rescue Me
Absolutely Fabulous
Twin Peaks

"hey, they made a movie about
Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."

As a child:

The Man from Uncle
Top of the Pops (Thursday night was magical as they followed each other)
The Monkees (don't laugh)
The Avengers
Department S
Herge's Adventures of Tintin
Thunderbirds/Fireball XL5 (and similar genres)
Dr Who
Hancock's Half Hour
Not only...but also (Peter Cook and Dudley Moore)

More recently:

Blackadder (3 and 4)
The Office (UK version)
I'm Alan Partridge (in fact anything with Alan Partridge)
The Fast Show
Harry and Paul
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

North Star

Brits:
All Creatures Great and Small (first three seasons)
Darling Buds of May
Morse
Sherlock Holmes (Brett)
Jeeves & Wooster
Poirot

US:
Columbo
Frasier
Simpsons (seasons 3-7)

Morse is awesome - real ale, classical music, cryptic crosswords, and, of course, the brilliant acting of John Thaw, Kevin Whately, and James Grout.
