Those who love this opera have great affection for each of these conductors. There are several CDs and DVDs that are well accepted for this, the greatest Strauss opera. (I could also say the same for three other Strauss operas.)

Sawallisch, by default, since that's my only recording of FRoSCH, which is why I don't think it fair to actually vote in the poll.

The Sawallisch certainly is a great choice. I have it along with the Solti and for one thing the sound is much clearer and richer. Better for fleshing out the color in the score. Undoubtedly Sawallisch's approach is a factor in this, too.

Veit Bach-a baker who found his greatest pleasure in a little cittern which he took with him even into the mill and played while the grinding was going on. In this way he had a chance to have the rhythm drilled into him. And this was the beginning of a musical inclination in his descendants. JS Bach

I haven't listened to many recordings of Die Frau Ohne Schatten, but the Karajan is my favourite, it's very thrilling and hauntingly beautiful; he was always a great straussian conductor.

Voted for Karajan.
