Brahmsian

In a similar vein to George's "Your favourite conductors" and Don's "Your favourite Bach Pianists".

I'll try to keep a running tally here and there.

OK, just off the top of my head to get it started.
Do what I must do, and let what must happen happen.

Even doing so, I misspelled Smetana.

Should have voted for Melos? I can't screw up that one.

Almost put this one in.  Damn, I should have made it a top 10 :D  Forgetting about Takacs, Alban Berg, Borodins, Kronos, Talich, and on and on and on.

Wakefield

Quatuor Festetics
Quatuor Mosaïques
Alban Berg Quartet
Leipziger Streichquartett
Quartetto Italiano

Not sure about #5, could be Pacifica or Cleveland, or the Borodins. My Italiano collection is sadly lacking; I think I'd like them. Maybe the Prague SQ from the old Suprahon days.

Dancing Divertimentian

Veit Bach-a baker who found his greatest pleasure in a little cittern which he took with him even into the mill and played while the grinding was going on. In this way he had a chance to have the rhythm drilled into him. And this was the beginning of a musical inclination in his descendants. JS Bach

Scarpia

Vermeer (for Beethoven)
Griller
Alban Berg (original lineup as recorded by Telefunken)
Italiano
Hagen (love their Mozart cycle especially)

Seems I have left no one to play Shostakovich.  That's a shame.
