We are washed up on a paradise Island, convienently alongside our own box collections (and multi-cds) of symphonies.  Also, there is an ocean powered top of the range music system which also survived our seagoing motorcycle crash.  Unfortunately we can only keep five sets, the rest will have to be burned to keep mosquitos away, so we have to argue for preservation...fiendishly, I reveal unto you exactly what we should keep, suggesting the rest of mine and ALL of yours be given to mosquito smoke.

BEETHOVEN - The Symphonies - KUBELIK - I like Kubeliks Beethoven.  There is sincerity and passion even when storms hit.
MAHLER - The Symphonies - INBAL - We can listen to stories on the Island!  All we have to do is stick an Inbal Mahler in the player.
BRUCKNER - The Symphonies - WAND - Not wide and hefty, more considered and self propelling.  Could provide a propellor solution to get off the Island.
ATTERBERG - The Symphonies - RASILAINEN - To prepare for sea-mad three legged pirates and the passing ships of maritime lovers.
TCHAIKOVSKY - The Symphonies - KARAJAN - To remember the power of loves and battles, lost and won, and to imagine snow in the wintertime.

Yes.  I know, it is a silly thread.  But I had fun writing it.   :P

I would take the bigger sets in general just because there are more discs in them!

BUT
Beethoven Symphonies (Furtwangler). Yes, not complete but I'd take it anyway.
Mahler (The DG set which basically have the complete works. I am allowed this because I took less in the Beethoven set)
Rubbra (Hickox)
Brahms (Furtwangler)
Haydn! Lots of CDs!
Do what I must do, and let what must happen happen.

Todd

LvB - Schuricht
Mahler - Bernstein III
Brahms - Kubelik
Mozart - Krips (incomplete, but I'll take what I can get)
Haydn - Russell Davies
The universe is change; life is opinion. - Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

People would rather believe than know - E.O. Wilson

Propaganda death ensemble - Tom Araya

We've been seriously short of silly threads of late. Thank you, John, for reviving the proud GMG tradition  8)

Haydn  Adam Fischer/Austro-Hugarian Haydn Orchestra
Beethoven Szell/Cleveland
Vaughan Williams Boult/LPO
Bruckner Maazel/SOBR
Mahler Chailly/Concertgebouw

No room for Sibelius  :'(

"hey, they made a movie about
Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."

Five Symphony Box Sets on a Desert Island? Hmmm....

(In no particular order)

1. Shostakovich: Haitink, RCO, LPO
2. Vaughan Williams: Thomson, LSO
3. Myaskovsky: Svetlanov, Russian State SO
4. Bruckner: Wand, Cologne Radio SO
5. Sibelius: Vanska, Lahti SO

Incredibly difficult list to make, but one that I would ultimately be very happy with on a lone island.

Unfortunately, that means Dvorak, Schubert, Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Prokofiev and a host of others are left behind.  :'(

Hmm, I'm surprised you like Haydn that much.  I thought for sure either Schubert, Tchaikovsky, Mozart or Shostakovich would have made that list over Haydn.

Remember it is a desert island. Haydn is sunnier, with a sense of humor. Besides, 104 of them!

I decided against Shostakovich and Sibelius on those accounts.

Why are you crying when Todd and Scarpia are bringing Mozart, while John is getting Tchaikovsky (well, it's not Muti, but Karajan isn't all that bad either)?! If we wait for Karl to post tomorrow, I'm sure he'll not let his Ozawa box of Prokofiev go up in mosquito-repelling flames. Wait awhile and you'll have the rest also.

Navneeth

True, Haydn will be much less depressing.  Thank goodness I didn't bring my Tchaikovsky!  ;D :D 8)
