I was in my local quality video library recently and chatting to the staff and they told me it was amazing how many DVD's came back snapped in half. They commeted that they thought people would be used to handleling them with CDs having been around for so long.

I've had a few tight CD's when getting them out for the first time and I've had to resist using extra force for fear of breaking them.

For the record I've never snapped one by accident and when I have broken one on purpose its taken a fair amount of pressure, so its not easy.

Lets have your votes and hear your stories! :)

If the CD is starting to bend when I'm taking it out the normal way, I will stop. Generally if I still haven't got it out, I'll work on the clasp in the middle (pressing it in or something).

If the CD is bending too much as you take it out, you might need to bend it back the other way a little after freeing it from its case. I've had discs that have 'fluttered' in sound because they were no longer perfectly flat after such abuse - bending them back just a fraction corrected the problem for me. ;)

The tightest CD clasps I've encountered have been on Japanese CDs. Really, it's like you need some sort of martial arts skill to get them out. Never broken one though  8)

Only ever had that happen on cheap CD-Rs.

I've had that happen on some DVDs - the kind that come with a weird centre clasp that you have to put under an electron microscope to work out how you're supposed to detach the sodding thing.  >:(  Never actually snapped one in half, though.

Exactly. It tends to happen with those 2-disc back-to-back cases - the ones that fold out.

Ah yes those. I often find the actual case breaks on those; the point where the double-sided tray is attached to the clear case snaps. Sometimes the first time you open it!

Um, I'm assuming everyone is applying a fair amount of downward pressure on these centre clasps, right?

Sure. As far as I can tell, the hairline cracks aren't formed by removing the CD - possibly by reattaching it, though.

Yes -- The only CD I've ever broken came in a case like that, and since it was part of a 3-CD set, it was much more difficult and costlier to replace than a single CD would have been.

Pressing a small coin (e.g. dime in the US) on the center clasp can make it easier. Saves the fingertips.

I'm also surprised at the breakage you mention, Wanderer; it hardly ever happens at the library where I work, but on the other hand the discs do come back with outrageous scratches on them, as though people have been rubbing them with sandpaper!

I've broken many a jewel case in my day, but the CDs have remained mysteriously unscathed...

Those are bad - the claps don't have flexible "theeth".

What works for me in worst cases is to break off one of the "theeth", to loosen the grip a bit.

i tried to get a library CD out from a case (which was nearly impossible) before but noticed that it was already snapped. It even had tape on it.  ::)

Looks like most people here are careful when handleling their cds/dvds. :)

And we will not even mention the childrens' dvds!   Some I can scrape clean and feed my two basset hounds!  ;D
