Elgar:  Enigma Variations                      Rattle/City of Birmingham SO

Loving the enigma of the enigma...  Rattle does pretty well with the Birmingham forces IMHO.

Melartin: Symphony No. 5 [Grin]

Poignant lyricism and bright, light and airy but wistful are two sentiments that occured to me as I listened to this work, most especially the two inner movements. I really like the scoring in this work.

On Friday, 18 MAY 2018, I listened to 1 CD.

1) F. Mendelssohn (1809-47):  Tr. 1-4.  String Octet [Double String Quartet] in E Flat Major, Op. 20 (1825) (21'45)  |Tr. 5. Variations concertantes for cello & piano in D Major, Op. 17 (1829) (9'25)  |Tr. 6.  Romance sans paroles [Song without words] for cello & piano in D Major, Op. 109 (1845) (4'07)  |Tr. 7.  Albumblatt [Album leaf] for solo piano in E Minor, Op. 117 (1837) (3'41)--Ensemble Explorations, Roel Dieltiens, dir., Frank Braley, piano (an 1874 Steinway) (Tr. 5-7).  Rec. AUG 2004.  A French harmonia mundi CD.  Published 2005.

These are all passionately played, committed performances.  The only limitation is that its total time is only 49'37.  Otherwise, highly  recommended.

Schubert: String Quartet No. 12 "Quartettsatz" [Quartetto Italiano]

A short but wonderfully vibrant and energetic work which is given a very appropriate performance here.

Some enjoyable retro listening.

It's all good...

I was initially a bit cool towards this. Lovely sound and playing, but seemed a bit staid next to Bruggen's or Freiburger B.O. spectacular renditions, but when you want to slow down a bit, this is very rewarding.

Brescianello:

Concerto I in F Major
Sinfonia I in D Major
Concerto II in A minor
Sinfonia II in G Major

The music is very appealing and charming with a voice of its own. The tone is consistently up beat. Tempi are brisk and the performances are taut yielding captivating, poised and energetic performances. The sound is also very good. Well worth investigating.

Some time ago I did some comparative listening of most avaliable recordings.... after which I picked Goebel.
In comparison with the harder driven Freiburgers there is more joy in music making and TLC, very spontaneous interplay within the ensemble. If my memory serves me right, the old Dutch HIP gang under Brüggen came a close 2nd.

Continuation with disc 2:

Like I said before: absolutely lovely... :)
Ewald Demeyere plays a great sounding harpsichord, a copy of a Henri Hemsch, 1736.

You surprise me :o I would have bet money that doing an AB comparison you'd have chosen the Freiburgers, perhaps because I love those guys sooo much.  In fact, when you bought this set, I felt a little bad, because I (incorrectly, as it turns out) thought you weren't familiar with the other set.
I should have known better! Anyway, good to know that you like it as much (or even more!) than I do.  Certainly 4 disks of fine music.
It's all good...

I like the Freiburgers' version I must admit but I also have the Bruggen version. That would be an interesting comparison but one which would take a good bit of time for me. Perhaps one day.  :)

It surprised myself as well!  :)

At forehand, I assumed the Freiburgers would be my ticket..

But there you go... you never know.

See, I just have that Musica Antiqua Köln set because basically every review I ever found was unanimous in praising it and said it had never been bettered.
