Thanks for this reassuring explanation, I got the idea that you did not take good care of your LPs. :)

On the contrary, I take better care of my vinyl than I do of myself  ;D

I do not like the way the CDs are stored in Leidse Koorboeken. I did put them in little envelopes to prevent damage.

British Symphonies. CD III.

Lennox Berkeley, Symphony No. 3. (LPO, Berkeley)
William Alwyn, Symphony No. 5. (LPO, Alwyn)
Grace Williams, Symphony No. 2. (BBC/WSO, Vernon Handley.
Malcolm Arnold, Sinfonietta, No. 1. (LSO, Braithwaite.

The Grace Williams is very good and the Alwyn.

I agree. That method of storing them in the books is prone to causing damage. They are too tight and it is the only flaw that I can see with the sets.

What do you think of the piece?  I have known of it forever (really:  I remember seeing the title while I was yet an undergrad) but I have never heard any of his music (I don't think).

I think that it's a very fine work Karl and have the Naxos version as well. To me it's modern, tonal music at its best. He quotes Sibelius, Mahler and Bartok as influences. At one moment a theme reminds me of something from 'Star Wars' but it is far from 'film music'. I suspect that you'd like it. Sadly he died prematurely in a car crash.

I've just played the Symphony and immediately wanted to hear it again. There is a memorable motto theme which runs through the work. I think it's great.

Schumann: Symphony No. 1 [von Karajan]

This is a very fine version that is full of energy, drive and forward momentum along with a deftness of touch which aids the inherent sense of vitality in the music. The playing from the BPO is top class as usual and the second movement of this symphony stands out for me with its captivating main melody and harmonies. The cello scoring is wonderful.

The Joubert is my favourite of those three. What did you think of them Harry?

I also have that one in my collection. I have not listened to it in some time so I must dig it out soon.
