Don't get too excited, Ilaria. Norgard has written a lot of first-rate junk, but Symphony No. 3 is the best place to start without question.

. . . and I'll bet Ray or Cato tried to tell me that, once upon a time : )

re: Taneyev - 1st symphony, final movement opening theme and Stravinsky's Petrushka (Tableau IV. Shrove-tide Fair (near evening))

Nope, I did not know it until you mention it.  And then I read it in the Naxos disc liner notes!  ;D  Sometimes it pays to read!  8)

Paul, it's too bad you don't get any enjoyment out of impressionistic music. Maybe you should read some of those Grove articles especially about Debussy since you value those writers' opinions so much. Just a thought.
yawn. (Not about impressionist music, about that stupid post.)

Shostakovich

Symphony No. 8 in C minor, Op. 65

Haitink

Decca

*Such an immensely incredible and powerful performance, of this masterpiece!  :)

I think I'm close to saying that the 8th symphony has become an equal (perhaps eclipsed) favourite to my long-time (forever) 10th!  :o :o :o :o

Shostakovich's 8th is my favorite symphony he wrote. I believe it's his masterpiece in the symphonic genre. It doesn't get more powerful than that long, harrowing opening and Haitink's account is the best on record IMHO.

Yes and an amazing, and innovative, work that is still referred to as Reich's masterpiece.

Didn't expect much but it gets really good from the 2nd movement onwards.

Anton Bruckner--Symphony No.9 in D Minor, featuring the Berliner Philharmoniker under Herbert von Karajan. Stunning, haunting opening to this work.

Good to hear, Rinaldo, I  just pre-ordered this and am holding off on a first listen until the disc arrives. Also purchased his newer recording of his first Cello Concerto with Wendy Sutter. I have the premiere recording of the first with Juilian Lloyd Weber, but Sutter is a great Glass interpreter.

Nice! Love that concerto. I need to dig this disc out again and listen to it. It's been a few years.

Listening to Violin Sonata No. 1. Such an exquisite piece of music.

Seems like there are two Dmitri Shostakovichs....the one I have been listening to for the past month, and this one...

Really strange...from two different periods in his life perhaps? Who knows, but this is far lighter and far fluffier than I was expecting.
