Britten, Diversions, for piano left hand and orchestra. Katchen/Britten with the London Symphony.

Either Katchen has seven fingers on is left hand or he's sneaking his right hand in when we're not looking. Can't be any other explanation for the hijinks here.

And what a work to be first in line to be plucked out of obscurity! Never in my lifetime, though...

It's a fabulous piece!

Monkey Phil, Symphony 8

Obviously it stands among the masterpieces of the genre, otherwise he wouldn't be on the cover. Proof.

What do you think of Glass' other symphonies, Ken? I really fell in love with the 5th and 3rd. And the 9th is quite spectacular.

Somewhat mixed feelings. I think 8 and 9 are superb. I have trouble with the middle ones though. I really did not like 7 the couple tomes I heard it.

I am looking forward to hearing Nyman's symphonies. I have heard two. Last I saw he was up to 11  (!!) . No recordings yet that I know of.  :'(

Amadeus Quartet
3-CD set

When I met Haydn for the first time his quartets were some of the first things I listened to, performed by the Amadeus Quartet.

That said,  I'm probably a bit biased in favor of these old friends; but I don't really believe it.

Today, after the HIP conversion, this still seems gorgeous.

Ensemble Elyma/Garrido
[asin]B0000044RA[/asin]

On a first listen to this and it is a really fine performance and recording.

This group - Ensemble Elyma - continues to impress with each release I sample.  Many appear to be OOP, which is unfortunate!

I totally agree, Dave! Gabriel Garrido is a splendid conductor and it's hard to find a bad recording by him and his Ensemble Elyma.

Availability is the only bad thing about them.  :(

Again, this time in terrific sound and great sonic transparence:

Nesterenko is impressive, but the entire piece comes off as one - very good!

Each and every time I listen to Brahms' 2nd symphony, I admire the piece more and more. This time is no exception: Jaap van Zweden conducting the Radio Filharmonisch Orkest (NL). A mighty fine performance.

Adrienne Csengery and András Keller do Kurtág's Kafka Fragments. I'm clearly having a binge of big cosmic cycles - what with this and the two last big Messiaen organ cycles. I even listened to Winterreise a few days ago.

Anyway, this is bloody wonderful music, bloody wonderful performance. I have no idea what it's about.

Yet.

Yes - that's a pretty good one.

Just finished a wonderful version of Beethoven's Missa Solemnis led by Steinberg. Excellent soloists.
