Block is from the beautiful tone school of piano playing - burnished, legato, impeccable execution, flowing, rounded, colourful. Despite this, the ambiguity makes these great poetry, as William Empson would have said, and I think this is a magnificent recording. On spotify.

Even Block's most willful recordings are magnificent to my ears.  No doubt that he's about beautiful tone, which adds to the allure.  I'm hoping that Warner will reissue all his 60s and 70s EMI recordings someday.

Or a Mussorksy piano suite ...
Well, there you are dealing with music that perhaps should have been written for orchestra in the first place.

+1. Agree totally. I don't really like the original piano version. I like the piece, but I like how it sounds with an orchestra far better.

Some pieces, like Le Tombeau de Couperin, go either way. I enjoy both versions equally, but for different reasons.

Rossini: L'Italiana in Algieri. Bergnza, Abbado LSO (DGG)

Mozart: wind concertos (all) . Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. Not very characterful. It's a good thing this three-fer set is cheap. Pleasant all the same.
