Maria Yudina plays Mozart K533/494. What I think is this: that Yudina was the best ever at using agogic hesitations and other types of rubato to bring a genuine feeling of spontaneity.

Schubert: Piano Music [Klavierstücke - Fantasies - Variations - Dances - Miniatures]
Alberto Miodini, piano

[asin]B00HYO8J44[/asin]

CD 4

IMO, a must-have for Schubert lovers.

Although the fluency of Miodini seems to deny it, it's notorious the enormous rate of work and research behind this 4-CD set in order to properly characterize every piano piece included here.  :)

Gloomy and chilly and windy, really windy this morning - a good day for Petrouchka, one of my favorite things in all the world.  Premiere hearing for Brendel's performance (Three Movements) :

and then Pictures At...I know I've heard his performance of this somewhere before, though can't quite place it.  And then, must work.

Have a Nice Day or Night!  :)

There is also this one, which I prefer by a slight margin

Which is not to imply the other set is less than excellent.

I knew it, but I haven't listened to it, so I guess I have some work to do. Thanks, Jeffrey! :)

That was the first period instruments recording of that piece I ever heard. Loved it then, love it now. Still my favorite Four Seasons. Last played it maybe just two or three days ago.

Yes, it's a favorite of mine, too. I'd say my 3 favorite Seasons are: Kuijken (SEON), Carmignola/Sonatori and Galffeti/Fasolis, not in a particular order.  :)

For all its flaws you want Thomson's 1947 mono recording of an abridgement. There is a good clip of the first 10 minutes on Youtube.

I noticed that . . . you do recommend it, then?

CD 2 of the 11 CD Sony  box of Schoenberg performances conducted by Pierre Boulez.   Serenade for clarinet, bass clarinet, mandolin, guitar, violin, viola, cello and a deep male voice, Op. 24 (33:54)   |   Five pieces for orchestra, Op. 16 {13:11)   |   Ode to Napoleon Buonaparte for string quartet, piano, and speaker, Op.  41 (16:23)--BBC Sym. Orch. in Five Pieces, Ensemble Intercontemporain in the Serenade and the Ode.  John Sirley-Quick, baritone in Serenade, David Wilson-Johnson, speaker on the Ode.

My favorite piece here is definitely the Serenade.  Sharp and piquant, it maintains interest rathe better than the other two two works.

The Serenade is brilliant, no argument there;  and I was a fan on first hearing, too.  The Ode has really grown in my affections, though.

Agostino Steffani: Suites Théatrales
Sonatori de la Gioiosa Marca

Utterly delightful music.

I'm quite tempted to order all of these Divox Antiqua disks by the Sonatori.

BTW, right now I'm listening to it via Rdio: great sound quality, superbly processed by the set iMac 27'', DacMagic and speakers Adam A3X.  :)

Great stuff of course.

Finishing up from last night:

Really fantastic performances of both L'enfant and Ma mère l'oye.

It is one of my one desert island discs, despite a few rough patches. The Thome stereo version is OK but misses something.
Here's a youtube of the start of a live production. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YrneAej8rh4
Not for all tastes but I love this music to distraction.

The 1947 Thomson version goes in and out of print, and did so on vinyl too.

Enough friends and acq. have been enthusiasts for this, that I feel I must at least give it a spin.  Thanks!

Time to give this new release a try.

Albrechtsberger, Johann (1736-1809) - String Trios & Quartets w/ the performers below; Viennese composer, theorist, and teacher of composition, known more for the latter two roles - nearly an exact contemporary of Haydn by dates - two of his famous students (mainly of counterpoint) were Beethoven & Hummel - not much available of compositions.  Dave :)
