Now:

Listening to Apollon musagete. Beautiful work and great performance.

One more work before I go to bed:

Listening to Memento mori. Absolutely gorgeous work.

MENDELSSOHN:        Symphony n. 5              / NBC Orchestra, Toscanini

The best version I know of this work. In the last movement Toscanini reaches a true greatness that is very impressive.

Other versions such as the ones of Sawallisch, Paray or Abbado seem pale compared to Toscanini.

Delius: Songs Of Sunset

I do not particularly like FiDi in opera, but he is really great in songs and the symphonic  repertoire.
"Remember Fafner? Remember he built Valhalla? A giant? Well, he's a dragon now. Don't ask me why. Anyway, he's dead."

the phone rings and somebody says,
"hey, they made a movie about
Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."

First this, which I am beginning to cherish a lot...

Per Nørgård
Libra et al.
Danish National Vocal Ensemble
Dacapo SACD

German link - UK link

then this, because I found it among some discs I brought up from the cellar

Iron Maiden
The Number of the Beast
EMI

German link - UK link
(and boy, does this hold up well. I actually spun it twice... listening to Prisoner as a tribute to the Iron Lady, as clearly it's anti-union:
"I'm not a number, I'm a free man
Live my life where I want to
You'd better scratch me from your black book
'Cos I'll run rings around you")

and then, keeping, vaguely, with the British theme:

The Versatile Viol
Tina Chancey
Irish & Scottish Music
Golden Apple

German link - UK link

HIPster

This very beautiful, new-ish recording:

[asin]B0085U0GWO[/asin]

A winner in both performance and price (purchased new via amazon mp for well under $8, including shipping).

Wise words from Que:

Never waste a good reason for a purchase....  ;)

Earlier:

The Versatile Viol
Tina Chancey
Irish & Scottish Music
Golden Apple

German link - UK link

In between: Alice Cooper's Trash (doesn't hold up as well as Iron Maiden, actually: too slick and pandering)

Now:

William Grant Still
Symphonies 2 & 3, Wood Notes
Naxos

German link - UK link
Chaaaaaaaaaarming!

Possibly my favourite of the lot, the 6th suite -- BWV 1012. Anner Bijlsma. My first time listening to any work from this set on a PI. Despite my liking/preference for PI in general, I don't think I'll lose interest in the Fournier, though.
