Only just purchased,  but I had to break this one in soon:

[asin]B009PHRIAE[/asin]

Since I took a liking to the recorder, this had to be on the menu.
Who else than Frans Brüggen? :) Who did for the revival of the recorder what Leonhardt did for the harpsichord.

Q

It's great, Que! I know you have had this box set in your wish-list for a long time. You're a methodic guy.  :)

A warm recommendation for this one:

Frans Brüggen Edition Vol. 2 - Italian Recorder Sonatas

Brüggen at his best as flutist: virtuosity without pedantry, full of adrenaline and flexibility.

There is not a minute of boredom here. Anthological.  :)

I listened also to the Vengerov/Slava Prok VC1, and was underwhelmed.
Might just be I was distracted.

...or so looking forward to the Messiaen! :)

Of course. And he studied with Bruggen.

Still in a John Kinsella mood, now exploring further his Symphony No. 9 (2003/4) for strings only, commissioned and played by the Limerick based Irish Chamber Orchestra. Woven through its three main movements (three 'recitatives' preceding each of them) are motifs from the hymn tune Jesu meine Freude, both in the version by Crüger and the one by Bach. The total effect is again very satisfying and indeed symphonic.

Maybe you also like Parra. He's an admirer of Ferneyhough and influenced by him. My impression of Ferneyhough is that he stayed an amateur (nothing wrong with that ). I dig Parra better.

I've started to listen to Hypermusic Prologue on spotify. Does the CD contain the words?

Go Ritter! I favor the Buchberger Quartet as well, but there seemingly are so many choices when it comes to Haydn. Still, these are the one I always return to after revisiting Kodaly, Angeles, Mosaiques and many others. Wonderful that Brilliant included them in this larger set.

What do you think of it?
Beethoven's Op. 133 -- A fugue so bad that even Beethoven himself called it "Grosse".

Clearly, here Jaap Schröder plays the right notes and beautifully, I should add.  :)

Hah! Those are just some of the ones I found on Youtube of the cantatas in the box, although that one is in the box too, of course.  8)

I really don't have that many versions to compare, but found the Buchbergers actually really good...I am tempted, though,  by the pioneering Schneider finally resissued on Music & Arts...

Cheers,
