This, which arrived yesterday

I listened also to the Vengerov/Slava Prok VC1, and was underwhelmed.
Might just be I was distracted.

SALIERI: Axur re d'Ormus
complete, 5 acts fits on 2 cd's 2hr. 36 min.
Andrea Martin, Curtis Rayam, Eva Mei, Ettore Nova..
Orchestra Filarmonica di Russe,  Rene Clemencic, cond.
recorded live somewhere* with an unidentified chorus and orchestra in 1989
Booklet has a multi-lingual synopsis and text in Italian only.
Could the singers have tuned to a'`=440 and the orchestra to a'=446 or thereabouts?  Something just doesn't feel right.
* Recorded at performances in the Teatro di Rinovati, Siena (August 1989)

Well, I fell asleep in the middle of the Adagio. :| In my defense, it's a long symphony, and I was very tired. But I really liked the first two movements. And I know it's Studio Magic, but I'll swear the Berlin Phil sounds better than it did under Karajan. Proper listen will be coming soon.

It happens. And yes, the BPO sounds gorgeous here. I'll wait for your comments of the rest with interest. Look for the Te Deum figurations in the finale!

Arditti Qt play Ferneyhough's 3rd quartet - I like this as much, if not more, than the 6th. Whenever I hear Ferneyhough's chamber music I always think of late Beethoven quartets - the box contains the most Beethovenian chamber music since op 135. This Arditti box may well be the most important new classical recording of the century so far, the way it makes so accessible music which is, quite frankly, revolutionary. It shows how Ferneyhough dwarfs all the others except Holliger

Since I do not wish to rush through my listening pile aka BRO haul, morning listening is a reprise of this:

A wonderful disc with music by William Byrd's predecessor! :)

Que - I've had this set on my 'wishlist' for several years, I believe and just waiting for a 'good deal' - what do you think of this set overall?  I'm willing to pay a few extra bucks, but just have read some variable reivews regarding certain recordings vs. others - thanks for any comments - Dave :)

Hi Dave,
For now, I don't think I have much more to add to my previous comment. :)
I am planning to post more eloborate comments after I have gone to more of the set and collected my thoughts.
A caveat in advance: I am not, and there are many, also at GMG, a Chopin connoisseur.... ::)

For the third and last time, playing this complete set....which is highly recommended to Que, Hipster, Neal, Marc, Premont, etc, etc.

I already imagined as much, Harry. Thanks! :)

The new erato

Playing no 4, which I didn't know from before, for the 2nd time in just as many days. Another revelation of a symphony outside the central canon of no 6-9, and just as stunningly played and recorded as the other Lindberg recordings og Pettersson. It looks as though Pettersson finally is getting the reference recorded cycle that he so truly deserves.

Fast forward in time:

Though the cover screams VIVALDI, 3 out of 4 works on this disc are by Baldassare Galuppi. Which is quite fine by me, we have our Vivaldi generously covered these days... :)
Performance by an orchestra and chorus from Dresden, Sara Mingardo and Roberta Invernizzi provide an Italian flavour... 8)

A recommendation by HIPster! :)

Maybe you also like Parra. He's an admirer of Ferneyhough and influenced by him. My impression of Ferneyhough is that he stayed an amateur (nothing wrong with that ). I dig Parra better.

Only just purchased,  but I had to break this one in soon:

Since I took a liking to the recorder, this had to be on the menu.
Who else than Frans Brüggen? :) Who did for the revival of the recorder what Leonhardt did for the harpsichord.

Well, I got it about six weeks ago. Agree that it is highly recommendable.

Great idea, Rafael. I think I'll give Boulez's Sony recording a spin later today.  :)
