I can share the feeling, I listened to it more than once too; too beautiful and powerfully! ;D I think the energy and the haunting atmospheres of Griffes' work superbly depict Coleridge's poem.

I've enjoyed reading all of your postings regarding this new boxed set purchase, Karl!  Congrats on it.

I'll join you with some Papa this evening - my very first Haydn CD purchase and still a favorite of mine today:

Antonin Dvorak--Symphony No.6  D Major, Op.60, Symphony No.2 in B-Flat Major, Op.4 and Symphony No.4 in D Minor, Op.13. All three symphonies are passionately performed by the London Symphony Orchestra under the guidance of Witold Rowicki.

Veit Bach-a baker who found his greatest pleasure in a little cittern which he took with him even into the mill and played while the grinding was going on. In this way he had a chance to have the rhythm drilled into him. And this was the beginning of a musical inclination in his descendants. JS Bach

Very, very easy on the ears. What a pity* the Germans killed him.

Very, very easy on the ears. Superb, focused, to-the-point liner notes.

Paraphrased from the liner notes: "You have to earn these instruments. The tempi are dictated by how heavy the touch of the keyboards is, and how unpredictable the wind supply. The difficulty these instruments pose in playing them turns out to be a splendid lesson; a fount of wisdom and joy at having mastered such an instrument with so enchanting a sound."

Dirt cheap from Krautmazon, I simply had to add my umpteenth Bach Organ cycle.

Cheers! My ears have always been kindly disposed to Haydn, you might say. I was in junior high school when we played a band transcription of the accompaniment to the trumpet concerto. That piece, while obviously from another time, impressed me mightily with its freshness, its affability, its immediacy. The Haus here at GMG has been a great help to me in navigating the sea of "Papa's" œuvre.
