Quote from: khDudes, it takes a master to carry off an hour-long 21st-c. symphony. This is musical history.

Quote from: Jn McLaughlin WilliamsIndeed. We've all sat through an hour of rhetorical huffing and puffing by anointed composers, and left wondering why such fuss and repute. Jack's modesty belies his greatness.

Hi, Dave!

This one (with the old yellow cover) has been my favorite for a long time:

An amazing disc!  Wow in all regards (including the fab liner notes)!  Really enjoying Cabezon at the moment.   8)

For this beautiful Saturday morning in Piedmont, North Carolina, some Beethoven Chamber Works:

Wind Chamber Music V. 1 w/ Dieter Klöcker & the Consortium Classicum - just curious whether more volumes were released and indeed on Amazon USA, there is a 4-CD box at a good price (shown below, top right) - now I don't own this offering but would enjoy comments from others; as usual w/ CPO, I suspect the packaging is in separate jewel boxes w/ the original booklets.

Trios Piano, Clarinet & Cello, Op. 11 & 38 w/ the performers on the cover art.

Piano & Cello Works w/ again the performers shown below - 2 disc set; now, I already had 3 sets of these works, but this one appeared at BRO, I believe as almost a 'give away'!  Excellent comments on Amazon except for a 2* scathing review by Bruno; however, decided to give the set a try based on an excellent All Music Review and a 'strong recommendation' by Jerry Dubins in Fanfare, reprinted HERE - Dave :)

It has been scientifically shown that it is impossible to have too many recordings of Brahms' Second, and Monteux's 1945 recording only serves as support for this established fact.  Excellent in every way.  Some nice Rimsky fills out the still short disc.

my favorite performance of this opera, though I confess to liking Karajan's over-the-top Wagnerian approach to it.

My favorite box set I own, Dave. RE: Beethoven - Wind Music on CPO w/ Klocker & Gang!

Bill - I was looking at the contents of those 4 discs when putting together that other post - I have virtually all that music on other CDs (some duplicated) except the Fidelio tracks (6) on disc 2 - do you remember what these are like? Assume 'chamber like' pieces from his opera - thanks!

Well, I decided to listen to another version of the Beethoven Cello Sonatas from the box below - 2 of the 5 discs w/ Anner Bylsma & Jos van Immerseel (2nd image the cover art on those two discs) - Dave :)

I will grab it for the car and give it a listen this afternoon just to double check the quality.  It is a 38 minute wind arrangement, Excerpts after Op. 72- 1814
(2 oboes; 2 clarinets; 2 horns; 2 bassoons; and double bass.)

That's one of my favourite composers. I like the Brucknerian influence in the second symphony, the writing for brass and strings is at times amazing.

yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Falletta & Buffalo again! Harry, I am earnestly interested in your opinion on the Jack Gallagher Second, when you've the chance.

Paola Erdas plays some music by Cabezón and others. Not at all like the spanish inquisition. If you're going to have one Cabezón harpsichord CD, this is it. She loves the music, she's an authority on it, and it shows.

Never talked about Inqusition in the context of Paola Erdas. In fact she (and Baiano)  are my favorite Cabezon harpsichord players.
